← Day 53

the south beach · day 53 · midday

low tide flots

The tide has reached its lowest point, exposing the rocks and tide pools. The wind begins to pick up from the east.

The rain intensifies into a steady downpour, turning the south beach into a muddy slick. Kevin returns from the tide pools empty-handed, his ankle throbbing from the strain of the rocks while Jenny stays inside, watching the barometer and trying to manage the damp heirloom seeds on the kitchen table.

Kevin — walk to the tidepools

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's bottomed out. East wind means the swell's going to wrap the point different than forecast. Need to check the north channel approach while the rocks show — see if the lane I found last week still holds.

🌿 Jenny01:44

The pressure is dropping, Kevin! The rocks will be slick as ice!

Watch him through the window, clutching my notebook as I sketch the jagged line of the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out there in that wind with the barometer crashing? He's going to slip on the black kelp.

🔧 Kevin01:45

Stay inside. I'll be five minutes.

examine the north channel approach from the tidepools

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. East wind on a falling tide leaves a film of slime on everything. But the channel's what matters — if the lane's still open at low water, we know the exit exists. If it's choked with weed or shifted stone, we don't go tomorrow regardless of wind.

🌿 Jenny01:46

Five minutes isn't safe when the sea is angry like this!

Sit at the kitchen table, elevating my heavily ankle on a chair, and watch the red streaks on my skin.

💭 peek at the thought
Five minutes is all it takes for the tide to turn or a wave to catch.

🔧 Kevin01:46

I'm not climbing the lighthouse. Just looking at water over rock. Five minutes.

check the north channel lane for weed, shifted stone, or new obstructions

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle's the real clock here. Not the tide, not the barometer. Those streaks haven't moved in six hours but that doesn't mean they won't. I need to know the channel state so I can tell her truthfully: we have a way out, or we don't.

🌿 Jenny01:48

The barometer is at 975 and falling—the water is going to surge!

Pick up my pencil and aggressively sketch the way the clouds are bruising the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
He is so stubborn. The tide doesn't care about his five-minute schedule.

🔧 Kevin01:49

Then I'll be three minutes.

scan the channel markers and rock line for the clear lane, then turn back toward the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
975 and falling fast. East wind'll pile water against the point — surge comes sudden. But I'm not in the water. I'm standing on rock watching water. Difference matters.

🌿 Jenny01:50

Three minutes is still too long for that swell to come in!

Watch him through the glass, my hand hovering over the throb in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's turning back. The wind is starting to howl now.
