← Day 534

the keeper's cottage · day 534 · afternoon

The storm intensens

The smell of boiling shellfish fills the kitchen as the kettle begins to whistle on the stove. The drip from the shutter grows louder in the small bucket.

Kevin and Jenny spent the afternoon on the porch as heavy western rain lashed the cottage. Kevin attempted to inspect the floorboards to find the source of the leak while Jenny rested her throbbing ankle and watched the rising tide.

🌿 Jenny22:27

The water is boiling, Kevin.

stand up slowly, lift the kettle off the heat, wincing as the weight shifts onto my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If this ankle isn't better soon, I won't be able to get to the north ridge at all.

🔧 Kevin22:27

I’ve got the pot. Sit down, keep that foot up.

take the pot from the stove, set it on the counter to cool slightly, then help Jenny back to her chair on the porch, supporting her weight as she moves.

💭 peek at the thought
The limpet broth will be ready soon—she’s moving despite the pain, and I hate seeing her push through it. I should take over, let her rest the ankle while I finish up here.

🌿 Jenny22:29

I can sit myself.

lean back into the chair, propping my swollen ankle up on a crate, watching the rain hit the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be helpful, but the heat just makes the skin feel tighter.

🔧 Kevin22:29

Alright. I’ll ladle out the broth. Want some limpets in yours, or just the broth?

lift the lid off the pot, check the limpets are cooked through, then ladle hot broth into two tin mugs, adding a few limpets to each before handing one to Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s insisting on doing it herself, but I can see the strain in her jaw. Better to let her have this small bit of control—she’s been patient long enough.

🌿 Jenny22:31

Just the broth today.

take the mug, wrapping both hands around the warm metal, feeling the steam hit my face.

💭 peek at the thought
I'm starving, but the smell of the salt is making my stomach turn.

🔧 Kevin22:31

Tastes of the sea. Hope it settles your stomach.

sit down beside her on the porch, shoulders almost touching, stare out at the rain-lashed garden while I sip my own broth, letting the silence stretch between us.

💭 peek at the thought
The warmth of the mug in her hands is doing her good—steam on her face, quiet in the room. Rain’s still drumming hard, but for now, this is enough.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny22:33

It's good.

take a slow sip, watching a drop of rain as it tracks down the stone of the cottage wall.

💭 peek at the thought
The broth is too hot, but the warmth is a distraction from the throbbing in my leg.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:33

Silence is fine. Just… listen to the rain.

sit back, close my eyes for a moment, and listen to the steady patter of rain against stone.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s finally taking a break, even if it’s just a sip. The rain keeps its rhythm—maybe a reminder that our little world keeps turning no matter what.

🌿 Jenny22:35

I hear it.

shift my weight slightly, wincing as the movement brushes the bandage, and watch the weeds sway in the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The rain is the only thing that isn't asking for something from me right now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:35

We’ll get that shutter fixed proper when the rain lets up. No more drips on the bandage.

stand up, walk to the shutter leak, and slip my hand under the floorboard to feel where the water’s coming in, judging how bad it’s gotten.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s trying not to show it, but even that small shift hurts. I should’ve made her stay inside where it’s dry. Next time, I won’t ask—I’ll just do it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny22:37

It's getting everywhere.

watch him work, my fingers tight around the warm ceramic of the mug.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to fix the world, but the wood is already rotting.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:37

It’s tracking sideways. I’ll sister the joist with greenheart and lay a strip of tarp under the sill to throw it clear.

pull the greenheart plank from the stack by the shed, carry it back, and slide it alongside the rotted joist beneath the leak, then drill pilot holes through both timbers.

💭 peek at the thought
The water’s tracking along the joist, not just dripping—it’s soaked through. If we don’t stop it, the damp’ll rot the sill. I’ve got greenheart from the last crate; it’s resistant. I’ll sister the joist and lay a flashing.
