Afternoon Prep

Kevin and Jenny are in the cottage preparing to cook the limpets for lunch while the clouds thicken overhead and the air remains humid.

The humidity is heavy enough to taste, and the flat sky is darkening to a bruised purple as the pressure holds. On the cottage porch, the smell of salt and vinegar lingers in the air while the water tank overflow seeps into the foundation. Jenny sits against the stone, her leg throbbing with a rhythmic pulse that matches the rising tide, while Kevin watches the horizon for the first heavy drops.

🌿 Jenny00:59

Is the water boiling yet? I need to wrap this again before we start eating.

Wince as I press the vinegar-soaked cloth to the swollen skin, then bite my lip to keep from crying out.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming in time with my heart; if I don't get this infection under, I'll never be able to reach the north ridge for those sketches.

🔧 Kevin00:59

Nearly. Just needs a minute more. Lean back, I’ll hold the cloth.

ladle hot water from the kettle into the pot to bring it to a boil, then turn to Jenny and gently re-wrap her ankle with the vinegar-soaked cloth, keeping it snug but not tight.

💭 peek at the thought
Jenny’s ankle’s bad. She’s trying not to show it, but she’s in pain. I need to get this cooking done quick so she can rest. The water’s close—steam’s starting to curl from the pot.

🌿 Jenny01:01

It's thumping again already. I can feel the heat moving deep in there.

Lean back against the stone wall and let out a long, shaky breath as the salt bites into the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being too careful, but the sting of the vinegar is the only thing that feels real right now.

🔧 Kevin01:01

I know. It’s supposed to sting. Means it’s working. Breathe slow.

press the cloth firmly but gently against her ankle, then move to the stove and stir the limpets in the boiling water, skimming off the foam that rises to the top.

💭 peek at the thought
The infection’s digging in. Vinegar’s helping draw it out, but it’s hurting her bad. I should’ve caught this sooner. Now we just ride it—keep it clean, keep her still.

🌿 Jenny01:03

I'm trying. It just feels like the whole island is trying to swallow me today.

Close my eyes and focus on the sound of the boiling water, trying to block out the pulse in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
If this gets to the bone, the seeds will just rot in that tin while I'm stuck on this rock.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:03

Then let it try. We’re not going anywhere. Not today.

lift the lid off the pot, check the limpets—they’re curled and red, almost done—then turn off the stove, pour a little of the broth into a tin mug for Jenny, and hand it to her with both hands.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not just talking about her leg. She’s tired. Of the pain. Of the quiet. Of wondering if this was the right choice. I don’t have words for that. But I can stay here. I can keep the fire going. I can keep the pot boiling.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny01:05

Thanks, Kevin. I'm not really hungry enough to eat.

Take the mug from him and take a small sip of the salty broth, letting the steam hit my face.

💭 peek at the thought
The mug is warm against my cold palms, but the ankle is still a fire.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:05

Drink it while it’s hot. I’ll get more limpets on if you want another round.

set the mug down carefully on the table beside her, then return to the stove, relight the burner under the empty pot, and start heating fresh water for a second batch.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s not eating because it hurts to move, not because she’s not hungry. The broth’s warm. That’s something. I’ll keep it coming. Little and often.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny01:07

Don't bother. I'm just going to sit here.

Rub the bridge of my nose through the steam, watching the clouds darken over the water.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get to the north ridge tomorrow, I'll never finish the sea beet sketches.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:07

Alright. I’ll sit with you then. No cooking. Just… here.

pull the stool from under the table and sit beside Jenny on the porch step, shoulder almost touching hers, and look out at the darkening water without speaking.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s done. Not just with eating—she’s shutting down. The pain’s winning for now. I can’t fix it with fire or food. I can only stay quiet and not leave her alone with it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny01:09

It's going to rain, isn't it?

Lean my head back against the white stone of the wall and shift my weight off the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the silence is quiet for once, even if it is heavy.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin01:09

Looks like it. Should cool things down. I’ll check the shutter later—see if it needs another wedge.

shift slightly on the step to face the cottage, watch the corner where the shutter leaks, and wait for the first drops.

💭 peek at the thought
Yeah. The air’s thick, the barometer’s steady but low—rain’s coming. Good. Maybe it’ll break the heat. Bad if it leaks through the shutter again. We’ll deal with it when it comes.
