Low Tide Foraging

The tide is at its lowest point, revealing hidden pools and limpets among the rocks.

Kevin and Jenny went to the tide pools at low tide to collect limpets for food. They both struggled to find significant amounts as the tide began to turn early, forcing them back to the cottage with a meager harvest.

Kevin — walk to the tide pools and start collecting limpets into a bucket, working the sheltered side of the rocks where they’re fattest and easiest to pry.

💭 peek at the thought
The low tide’s pulled back like a held breath—limpets clamped tight in the pools, sea beet glistening where the water’s just gone. I could fill a bucket in twenty minutes if I moved steady. Jenny’s ankle’s still hot, but she’s been eating what I bring. Maybe she’d take limpets plain, just to feel something real in her mouth.

Don't stay too long, the tide comes back faster than the chart says.

sit on the porch, open the seed tin, and inspect the three seeds for any white FU of mold.

💭 peek at the thought
If he's going out there, I might as well check the seeds again. My ankle feels like it's on fire.

🔧 Kevin00:50

I’ll be quick. Hand me the bag when I’m back—I’ll rinse them in the bucket before I come up.

Keep working the pools, using the knife tip to loosen each limpet before it clamps down, dropping them into the bucket. Move fast but steady, eyes on the water’s edge where the first ripple will show the tide’s return.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right—this shelf floods quick when the tide turns. But I can’t not take what’s here while it’s exposed. Three seeds in her palm, checking for mold… she’s thinking ahead, always. Even now, she’s sorting what might live if we don’t.

way don't get the salt water on the sketches.

stand up, grab the vinegar and salt from the kitchen, preparing to debride the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks salt water will help the seeds, but it might just ruin the coating. I need to clean this leg properly first.

🔧 Kevin00:53

It’s zipped. Go on with your ankle—I’ll be back before the water touches the rock.

Pry the last few limpets from the deepest pool, drop them in, then grab the bucket and start walking back up the beach toward the cottage, boots sinking in wet sand.

💭 peek at the thought
Notebook’s in my jacket pocket, zipped. She knows I forget things when I’m moving. The sketches are the only record of the sea beet’s salt glands across the elevation gradient—two months of early mornings on the north ridge. Salt water ruins pencil. She’s not just talking about the book. She’s talking about what’s in it.

way don't get any grit on the table.

sit on the kitchen stool, roll up my trousers, and prepare the vinegar and salt mixture for the swollen ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If he brings that water near the notebook, I'll lose my mind. My ankle is throbbing so hard I can barely focus. Need to get this infection under.

🔧 Kevin00:55

Hold on—I’ll rinse them first. Outside tap, quick.

Turn toward the side of the cottage where the rainwater tap drips into a bucket, set the limpet bucket down, and pour fresh water over them, swirling to wash off sand and shell fragments before lifting them out by hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s setting up for the debridement—vinegar to clean, salt to draw. Grit on the table means sand in the wound. I didn’t rinse them yet. The bucket’s got seawater and grit from the rocks. If I bring it straight in, I’ll undo what she’s trying to do.

🌿 Jenny00:55

way hurry back. The tide is turning in.

take a clean bowl, pour in the vinegar and add a heavy pinch of salt, stirring until the crystals dissolve.

💭 peek at the thought
Fresh water is better for the seeds, but the vinegar is what I need. My ankle is pulsing in time with the waves. I have to start now.

🔧 Kevin00:57

Right behind you.

Scoop the rinsed limpets into the bowl I brought, carry it through the door, and set it on the far end of the table—clean edge, no grit—then turn back for the pot.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s got the solution ready—clear, sharp, the salt gone into it. The tide’s voice is changing out there, that low suck of water finding its way back. I can hear it even over the tap. She’s not just watching the ankle. She’s watching the clock.

🌿 Jenny00:57

careful with the water near the paper.

soak a clean cloth into the vinegar-salt mixture and begin to press it against the swollen, angry skin of the ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's thinking about the sketches for once. The skin on my ankle is so tight it feels like it's going to split.
