The Rising Inflow

Heavy rain lashes the roof as the wind picks up, pulling at the garden tarp. Jenny sits on the bench, watching the water pour off the eaves while Kevin monitors the barometer's steady drop.

The rain intensifies, turning the garden soil into a slick, grey slurry. The high tide has reached its peak, lapping at the lower stones of the shrine, while inside the cottage, the sound of rats scratching behind the pantry shelves competes with the persistent drip from the leak in the shutter joint.

Check the stakes on the south side, Kevin. The wind is catching the edge.

Winces as she shifts weight off her swollen ankle, gripping the edge of the wooden table.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; if this storm hits hard, the garden wall will be lost before I can even finish the seedlings.

On it. You stay put.

walk to the garden, check south tarp stakes, drive them deeper with mallet, add stone weights if needed

💭 peek at the thought
The tarp's south corner has been lifting each gust — the stakes are in sand, not soil. Need to drive them deeper or add deadweight before the next squall hits. Barometer's still dropping; this isn't peaking yet.

Take the lantern. You can't see the stakes without it.

Reaches for the vinegar and salt jar, hands trembling slightly as she prepares the soak.

💭 peek at the thought
If he goes out in that rain, he'll catch a way and then I'll be truly alone in this mess.

🔧 Kevin01:31

Got the lantern.

grab lantern from porch, walk to garden, shine light on south tarp stakes, assess hold in wet sand

💭 peek at the thought
She's prepping the poultice again — ankle's still inflamed. Lantern's by the door; I'll grab it and get low to see the stake lines in this rain.

🌿 Jenny01:33

Be careful, the mud is turning to soup.

Pours vinegar into the small bowl, biting through her lip as the salt hits the water.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is going to rip that tarp right off if he isn't deep enough; the seedlings will go.

🔧 Kevin01:33

They're tearing out. I'll trench and deadman them.

dig shallow trench behind stakes, run tarp rope through, bury rope loop with stones and wood as deadman anchor, pull tight and stake over it

💭 peek at the thought
Stakes are pulling loose — sand's saturated. Need more than just driving them in; this calls for deadman anchors or a trench to hold the line.
