The Storm Breaches

The first heavy rain begins lash the roof as the tide begins, forcing Kevin to retreat from the dock.

The air pressure is dropping rapidly as the wind shifts to the west, signaling a storm more aggressive than predicted. The tide is going out, exposing the tide pools, but the rain is beginning to pick up, finding gaps in the cottage shutters.

🌿 Jenny02:43

way inside, Kevin! The tide is high and the wind is turning!

Limp to the porch to check the rain tank intake, then sit by the stove to elevate my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast. If the boat doesn't come, the garden will be lost to the runoff.

On my way. Wind’s backing west—looks like it’s going to sit on us.

walk up to the cottage, step onto the porch, and pull the storm latch on the door shut behind me.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm’s moving in fast—tide’s rising, wind shifting. I should’ve left the dock sooner. Jenny’s already moving, limping but purposeful. I’ll get inside and help secure what I can before the rain really hits.

🌿 Jenny02:45

It's already at 976 and falling. It's not just going to sit.

unroll the poultice to check the swelling for more red streaks.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's just a sitting. The pressure is screaming in my joints.

🔧 Kevin02:45

Barometer’s crashing. I’ll secure the aerial and bring the set in—then we’ll check that ankle proper.

grab the coiled spare coax from the porch, climb the mast steps quickly, and disconnect the shattered aerial from the insulator, lowering it to the deck while keeping tension on the feed line.

💭 peek at the thought
Pressure’s dropping faster than I expected—this isn’t just a blow, it’s a deep low. Jenny’s checking for infection; if those streaks are spreading, we’re past poultices. I need to get the antenna down before it tears loose and take the radio inside.

🌿 Jenny02:47

Just get it dry. The salt is already in the connections.

press a thumb against the swollen skin and wince at the heat of the inflammation.

💭 peek at the thought
If the radio gets wet, I can't call for the boat when the way peaks.

🔧 Kevin02:47

Coming down. I’ll wrap the coax in tape and stuff the set in the dry bag—then we’ll hit the antibiotics.

climb down the mast, shake rain from the coax, wrap the connector and exposed shield in self-amalgamating tape, then carry the radio and dry bag inside, setting them on the kitchen table away from the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt’s crept in everywhere—connections, wood, even the wound. If the radio’s going to work when we need it, I’ve got to dry and seal it now. Jenny’s ankle’s hot and tight—cellulitis setting in. We’re down to antibiotics and elevation.

🌿 Jenny02:49

Antibiotics first. The dressing is go-sticky and smells like rot.

peel back the damp gauze, hissing as the fabric clings to the raw skin.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the radio is safe. My ankle feels like it's being squeezed by the tide.

🔧 Kevin02:49

I’ll get the water on. Hold still while I clean it—this is going to sting.

fill the kettle from the rain tank, set it on the wood stove to boil, then take the antibiotic cream and clean gauze from the first aid kit and place them on the table beside Jenny.

💭 peek at the thought
The dressing’s adhered and the wound’s foul—this needs cleaning now, not later. Antibiotics won’t work if we’re dressing over rot. I’ll boil water, clean the area, and reapply fresh gauze with the antibiotic cream.
