A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

Kevin heads to the dock to inspect the mooring ring as the tide reaches its peak, while Jenny stays at the cottage to tend to her ankle and monitor the dropping air pressure. The air is heavy with the humidity of the approaching storm.

🔧 Kevin02:33

I’m going down to the dock to give the ring a final tug. Back in ten.

walk to the dock, inspect the mooring ring under load by pulling the dinghy’s stern line hard, then return to the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind’s picking up, barometer’s still falling. Jenny’s inside, ankle wrapped, quiet. I should check the mooring ring one more time before the storm hits — not because I doubt the fix, but because my hands need to move.

🌿 Jenny02:33

Watch the swell on the way. The tide is higher than I expected.

Limp to the kitchen table, unwrap the sticky sea much poultice from the swollen ankle, and prepare a fresh dressing with clean gauze and boiled water.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; 979 hPa is a warning, not a suggestion. I need to get this dressing changed before the wind really turns.

🔧 Kevin02:34

I’ll keep to the sheltered side. Shout if you need anything.

walk carefully along the shore toward the dock, staying on the higher gravel where the spray won’t pull me off, eyes on the incoming swell, then reach the dock and test the mooring ring by jerking the dinghy’s stern line sideways and fore-a

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the swell’s building faster than the forecast. I’ll keep low on the rocks, eyes on the water. She’s redoing the poultice herself; that’s a good sign. Means she’s feeling strong enough to tend to it.

🌿 Jenny02:35

Don't stay out too long. The wind is shifting to the north.

Sit on the kitchen chair, peel the old bandage away from the skin with a wince, and apply the fresh poultice to the red, angry joint.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the boat, but I'm worried about the infection. If this ankle goes septic, I can't even walk to the north ridge.

🔧 Kevin02:37

Won’t be long. Just need to see if it’s holding.

reach the dock, grab the dinghy’s stern line, put my weight into it sideways and forward to test the mooring ring for any shift, then release and jog back toward the cottage, head down against the rising wind.

💭 peek at the thought
North wind means it’s coming straight off the water — full fetch. She’s in pain but not stopping. I’ll be quick, then get back to help her secure the cottage.

🌿 Jenny02:37

get back! The sky is bruising!

Wrap the fresh gauze tightly over the poultice, securing it with tape, and stand by the window to watch the waves.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is getting teeth. If that storm hits before the boat comes, we're stuck with this leg and this silence.

🔧 Kevin02:38

It’s solid. Coming in now.

run up the path to the cottage, burst through the porch door, and slam it shut behind me, then move to the window beside Jenny to watch the sea rise.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the light’s going flat and grey, the kind that means wind’s about to bite. I saw no movement in the ring; it’s holding. Time in.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny02:39

get those clothes off. You're freezing the room.

Reach for a dry towel on the hook for him, then turn to the wood stove to start a fire.

💭 peek at the thought
He's soaked through and shivering, and I'm rotting right here. The barometer doesn't lie; the island is coming alive.

🔧 Kevin02:41

Sorry. Getting out of these wet things now.

pull off my soaked jacket and boots, shrug out of my wet layers, and stand in my undershirt and trousers while Jenny hands me the towel, then begin drying myself quickly by the stove as she feeds kindling into the fire.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s already moving — fire first, then me. Salt’s in my clothes, wind’s in my bones. I’ll strip fast, get dry, and let her tend to the stove.

nvidia/nemotron-3-super-120b-a12b

🌿 Jenny02:41

Put the kettle on. We need tea before the dark.

Move the cast iron way to the stove, then sit on the bench to check the swelling on my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The wind is through the stone now. If the roof leaks, I won't be able to reach the seed tin.
