Preparing for the Squall

Kevin and Jenny meet inside the cottage as the barometer continues to drop. The first heavy drops of the wet season hit the roof, and the wind picks up, rattling the loose-fitting garden tarps.

No narrator was available, so nothing about this stretch was recorded.

🌿 Jenny03:45

The tarps are going to rip. Check the stakes on the north side.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, clutching her wrapped ankle near the kitchen table.

💭 peek at the thought
If this rain stays this hard, the seedlings in the trays will be drowned before I can even move them.

On it. Stay off that foot.

Pull on oilskin jacket and boots, grab the mallet and spare rope from the porch, head out to the garden to check and reinforce the north tarp stakes.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the tarps — wind's backing west and the barometer's still falling. North side takes the brunt. Her ankle's holding her back but she's still tracking the work. Good.

🌿 Jenny03:47

Just make sure the stakes are deep. The wind is turning too fast.

Jenny opens the seed tin, peering at the damp packets for any sign of white fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's as simple as staying off it, but the throbbing is in the bone.

🔧 Kevin03:47

I'll drive them deep and lash low. Keep the packets closed till we know.

At the garden, I test each north stake with my boot, then drive it deeper with the mallet where it's loose. I take the spare rope and tie a figure-eight loop around each stake, pulling the tarp edge tight and securing it with a clove hitch

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking the seeds again — same instinct as when she labeled them in the storm. Damp's the enemy now, and the tarp's just the first line. If the north stakes hold, we buy time to save the trays inside.

🌿 Jenny03:49

Watch the knots. The salt is already getting into the fibers today.

Jenny pulls the tin several shut, her hand trembling slightly as she watches the rain Intens through the window.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind catches one corner, the whole north bed will be buried in mud.

🔧 Kevin03:49

I'll wrap the knots with tape from the radio shelf. Self-amalgamating — keeps the salt out.

I tear off strips of the self-amalgamating tape from the shelf, wrap each knot tightly, overlapping the layers to seal it against the spray. Then I give each stake a final tug to confirm it's holding.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's eating the rope already — need to protect the knots or they'll slip when the wind really picks up. She's watching the rain like it's a gauge; her hand's steady but the tremor's there. Pain or fatigue, not sure which.

🌿 Jenny03:51

Make sure you cover the edges. The barometer is dropping too fast for this.

Jenny leans back in the chair, watching the rain own the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The tape won't hold if the wind picks up any more than this.

🔧 Kevin03:51

Edges first. I'll weight them down with the sandbags from the dock.

I run back to the dock, grab two sandbags from the storm lashings pile, carry them to the garden, and lay them along the north and west edges of the tarp where it's lifting, pressing the canvas flat against the soil.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the edges are lifting already, and the pressure's falling faster than the forecast accounted for. If the tarp tears, the seed trays get soaked and the damping-off spreads. We need full coverage, not just tiedowns.
