A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The rain lashes against the cottage walls with a heavy, rhythmic drumming, muffing the world outside. Inside, the smell of damp earth and drying sea beet fills the air as Jenny sits at the table, her ankle propped up and swollen. The water tank is full, but the constant overflow is threatening the integrity of the floorboards.

Nothing for now.

Walk to the back of the cottage, check the rain tank overflow pipe for blockage, then head inside to light the stove and start cooking.

💭 peek at the thought
The tank’s overflowing again — I’ll need to check the overflow pipe before dark. Rain’s steady, but the barometer’s holding. Jenny’s inside, probably resting her ankle. I should get something warm going — maybe limpets and that tin of mackerel from the crate.

Check the mesh at the end, it looks matted.

Sit on the kitchen chair, prop the swollen ankle up on a

💭 peek at the thought
The pipe is going to clog with those leaves again if I don't clear it, but my leg is screaming.

On it.

Pull the overflow pipe’s end mesh free, shake out the matted debris, rinse it in the bucket of seawater by the door, then refit it. Wipe hands on trousers and step inside to the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s right — the mesh clogs fast with silt and bark this time of year. I’ll clear it and check the tank level while I’m at it.

🌿 Jenny03:57

I'm starving. Is there any mackerel left?

Reach for the seed tin on the table, tracing the mold-damaged lid with a thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the water is flowing, but the hunger is still gnawing at my ribs.

🔧 Kevin03:58

One tin left. I’ll open it now.

Take the last tin of mackerel from the shelf, pierce the lid with the knife, pour contents into the skillet over low heat to warm through. While it heats, fill the kettle and set it on the stove. Place a plate and fork beside Jenny’s chair.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s drawn to the seed tin again — old habit when she’s anxious or tired. Two tins of mackerel were in the waterlogged crate; we’ve had one each so far. One left. I’ll warm it up — simple, hot, fills the belly. No need to mention the seed tin; she knows I see her.

🌿 Jenny03:59

Thanks. I don't think I could open the tin myself.

Lean back against the chair, watching the rain start to blur the window.

💭 peek at the thought
The smell of the fish is better than the salt, but the ache in my ankle is winning.

🔧 Kevin04:01

Anytime.

Finish warming the mackerel, pour it onto Jenny’s plate, hand her the fork. Fill both tin mugs with hot water from the kettle. Sit on the edge of the kitchen bench, eat my portion standing, keep the skillet handy in case she wants more.

💭 peek at the thought
She’s been independent this long — asking for help with the tin means her ankle’s worse than she’s letting on, or she’s just spent. Either way, I’ll keep it quiet. Food’s ready soon. I’ll eat standing, like usual, so she can have the chair.

🌿 Jenny04:01

The rain is coming in fast, isn it?

Take a small bite of fish, chewing slowly while looking at the seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's being helpful, but the silence is just as heavy as the infection right now.
