A Quiet Stretch

Back at the cottage.

The warm rain continues to drum rhythmically against the cottage roof, the smell of damp earth and salt filling the air. The low tide is fully out, exposing the slick rocks and kelp pools of the north shore. Inside, the atmosphere is heavy with the humidity of the dry season and the tension of the approaching storm indicated by the falling barometer pressure.

🔧 Kevin18:48

Kettle's hot if you want tea.

Hang the oilskin on the porch peg, wipe hands on trousers, and go to the stove to check the kettle.

💭 peek at the thought
Back under the porch roof. Rain's easing. Kettle's still warm on the stove. Jenny's ankle needs another look before dark — she'll downplay it. The seed tin's on the shelf, mold packets separated. Radio watch at 1800. Barometer's rising but slow. Dock held at low tide; shim's good. Need to check the generator oil before night. And the south piling at next low. Not tonight.

🌿 Jenny18:48

Thanks. I'll just sit for a minute.

Sit on the kitchen chair, lifting the swollen ankle onto the table, and reach for the way on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain; I need to check that barometer again before the humidity gets worse for the seeds.

🔧 Kevin18:50

Want me to re-wrap it after? Fresh gauze in the kit.

Pull the tin mugs down, pour hot water over the coffee grounds in each, set one on the table near her good hand.

💭 peek at the thought
She's favouring it more than she let on this morning. The red line hasn't faded. She knows it too — reaching for the notebook instead of arguing.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:50

yeah, I'll do it after I finish the coffee.

Take the mug, wrap both hands around the warmth, and look at the barometer on the wall.

💭 peek at the thought
way's trying to be helpful, but I need to see the wound myself to know if it's clearing.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:52

Barometer's honest. Rising means something. Just not what we want.

Sit opposite her at the table, cradle my own mug, let the steam rise.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the glass better than I am. 994 and rising — but slow. The kind that lies. She's thinking about the supply boat, the dinghy, the crossing. Same as me. Neither of us says it.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:52

It always drops right when I'm tired to move.

Take a slow sip of the coffee and watch the rain streak against the windowpane.

💭 peek at the thought
It's dropping too fast. If the storm hits early, I need to make sure the seed tin is high up and dry.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:54

You've moved plenty. Seed tin's clean. Dock held. Ankle's not gone septic. That's not nothing.

Take a sip of coffee, set the mug down, reach for the notebook on the shelf.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the barometer. She's talking about the ankle, the mold, the radio silence, the garden half-built, the letter under the floorboard I never sent. Four days to Thursday if the boat comes. She's done the math too.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:54

It's a start, I guess.

Lean back, feeling the heat coming off the ankle, and watch the needle on the barometer creep lower.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right, but "not septic" feels like a low bar when I'm still stuck in this chair.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:56

Needle's moving. Southwest. We'll batten the porch shutter and check the dinghy lines before dark.

Stand, finish the coffee in one swallow, set the mug hard on the table, and go to the porch door to check the shutter fastenings.

💭 peek at the thought
She saw it. The needle creeping back down. 994 to 992 in the time it takes to drink coffee. Southwest swell building. She knows the rule — below 1005 with southwest swell, secure the seed tin, check the dinghy seacocks twice. The supply boat won't come on schedule. I didn't tell her the coast guard said diverted. No ETA. She didn't ask. She just watches the needle.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:56

Jenny — shift slowly, wincing as the weight moves, and reach for the bowl of saline and tweezers on the table.

💭 peek at the thought
If the wind shifts, the dinghy'll be a mess. I need to check the south mooring ring one last time. continuedSAY: I'll get the ankle cleaned first. Give a minute.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:58

Want the lamp?

Pick up the LED headlamp from the radio shelf, click it on, set it on the table angled over her ankle, then go to the porch shutter.

💭 peek at the thought
She's doing it one-handed, left hand steady, right shoulder tight. The tweezers catch the light. She doesn't need me hovering. She needs the light held where she's working. The tweezers tip is snapped — she's managing anyway. Stubborn as the engine bolt that wouldn't turn.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:58

Jenny — dip the tweezers into the saline, and begin to debride the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The light is too bright, but I need to see the edge of the red. It's still angry. continuedSAY: yeah, put it there.
