The Falling Pressure

Kevin and Jenny stand on the porch as the wind picks up from the north. Kevin watches the barometer needle drop to 987 hPa while Jenny tightens the fresh wrap on her ankle brace.

Kevin tightened the south water tank strap and inspected the dock pilings while the tide was low, finding the north piling shim holding solid. Jenny debrided her ankle wound with saline and tweezers, noting reduced swelling but persistent heat, then inspected the heirloom seed tin and found the mold contained to the previously identified packets.

🔧 Kevin18:18

Morning. Barometer's steady at 987. Yanmar ran clean at half throttle — faint vibration above eighteen hundred but nothing like before. Dock held. How's the ankle?

pour two mugs of coffee from the pot on the stove, set one on the porch rail for Jenny

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving better. The wrap's clean, tension even. She did it herself while I was at the dock. Good. The barometer's holding but that western sky doesn't lie — front's building. Need to get the tank straps checked before the shutter work. And the radio watch at 0800. Supply boat's still four days out if the low breaks Thursday.

🌿 Jenny18:18

It's throbbing. way than yesterday, I think.

Take the mug with a shaking hand, looking out at the grey clouds gathering over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping, the storm is coming, and my leg feels like it's being held in pliers.

🔧 Kevin18:20

Drink it slow. I'll check the tank straps and the north piling shim while the tide's still low enough to see the base. Radio watch at oh-eight-hundred.

pull on oilskin jacket, grab the 19mm wrench and the notebook from the kitchen shelf, step off the porch toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Hand's shaking. Could be the cold, could be the infection talking, could be the antibiotics wearing thin. She says better but the body tells different. Red line was two centimeters past the mark yesterday. Need to check it when she takes the brace off. Coffee'll help the shake if it's just cold and fatigue.

🌿 Jenny18:20

Watch the water, Kevin. It's turning too fast.

Sit on the porch chair, pull the way onto my lap, and start drawing the way the clouds are bruising over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way goes, the whole dock is lost, and I can't get out with the seed tin anyway.

🔧 Kevin18:22

Aye. Back before oh-eight-hundred.

walk down the path to the dock, eyes on the water's surface for chop pattern and current lines

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the water same as me. Tide's rising wrong — fast, confused. Means wind against current building out there. The bruised clouds over the ridge confirm it. Front's moving faster than the barometer says. Tank straps first, then the shim, then radio. She draws to settle the shake. Let her.

🌿 Jenny18:22

Don't stay out too long if the wind shifts north.

major the coffee, watching the pencil**( across the paper to capture the jagged edge of the clouds.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide is coming in too fast for the shim, and my leg is pulsing with every wave.

🔧 Kevin18:24

Won't.

reach the dock, crouch at the tank straps against the cottage back wall, check tension and chafe on each ratchet

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting north would drive the swell straight into the dock face. She knows. I know. The sister joint on the north piling's soft — bolts bit but the wood's punky underneath. If the northerly hits before the low breaks, the dock takes the beating. Tank straps are quick. Shim check's quick. Radio watch is the one that matters.

🌿 Jenny18:25

Check the south side again, it looked loose.

lean back against the stone wall, trying to ignore the heat radiating from my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If those straps fail, we lose the water, and I'm done for sure.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin18:26

South strap next.

move to the south corner of the tank, wrench on the ratchet, crank it down until the webbing sings tight, run a finger along the strap feeling for fray where it kisses the stone

💭 peek at the thought
South side tank strap. She caught it yesterday too. The cottage frame shifts when the tank's full — water weight finds the weak corner. She's seen it move. Good eye. I'll cinch it proper this time, not just snug.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny18:26

It's tight now. Check the bolts when you can.

pick up the sketch of the way the clouds are forming, my hand shaking just a little.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working too hard for a dock that might be gone, and the air is heavy like lead.
