The Pressure Drops

Kevin and Jenny sit on the porch as the sky thickens over the island. The barometer needle steadily drops to 988 hPa while the wind begins to pick up from the north.

The air pressure is holding steady at 997 hPa, but the thickening clouds signal a shift in weather. The tide is rising, pushing against the island's edge, and the focus is on securing the cottage before the wind turns.

🌿 Jenny19:16

The wind is turning, Kevin. We need to secure the shutters and check the rain tank now.

Stand up slowly with a wince, clutching the ankle, and move toward the kitchen to grab the barometer.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping faster than I liked; if this storm hits before the boat, I won't be able to walk to the radio.

Shutters first. Tank's fine — near full. I'll get the windward side battened down.

walk to the windward shutters with hammer and nails, start securing the loose corner FIRST

💭 peek at the thought
Wind backing north with the barometer at 988 and falling — this isn't the southwest blow we rode out. Different angle on the dock, different fetch on the shutters. She's moving stiff, favouring the ankle. Let her take the barometer; I'll take the outside work.

🌿 Jenny19:18

Watch the nails on that corner; if the wood splits, the whole frame comes loose.

Limp to the shelf, take the barometer, and note the drop in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always rushing to fix the physical stuff while the world is literally rotting from the inside—just like my leg.

🔧 Kevin19:18

Pilot holes. Got it.

drill pilot holes in the windward shutter frame before driving nails, then batten the corner with timber strips

💭 peek at the thought
She knows these shutters better than I do — watched her nurse them through the last gale. Wood's salt-softened. Pilot holes or the frame goes. Barometer's still falling; we've got time before dark but not much.

🌿 Jenny19:20

It's 988 hPa and falling fast. Get those strips tight before the wind really starts.

Squint at the reading, write, then head to the kitchen to change the poultice.

💭 peek at the thought
If he splits the wood, the rain will get right through the sketches, and I can't have the lichen patterns ruined.

🔧 Kevin19:20

Strips going on now. Radio check after?

drive the timber strips home with the hammer, checking each batten's tight against the frame, then move to the leeward shutter

💭 peek at the thought
Eight millibars since dawn. Fall's accelerating. She's right — strips need to be drum-tight before the gusts hit proper. Ankle's slowing her but she's still moving. Good.

🌿 Jenny19:22

Not yet. Get the shutters solid first. The wind is picking up.

way on the kitchen stool, unwrap the warm sea beet poultice, and hiss as the air hits the inflamed skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the radio fails, I'm just a woman on a rock with a rotting leg and dying seeds.

🔧 Kevin19:22

Leeward side next. Door after.

move to the leeward shutter, drill pilot holes, and batten it down with timber strips

💭 peek at the thought
She's hurting and still tracking the barometer. Wind's got teeth now — can hear it in the eaves. Leeward shutter next, then the porch door. Radio can wait ten minutes.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:24

Make sure the corner is really tight. The pressure is dropping faster than I like.

wipe the sticky mess from the ankle, mash fresh sea beet and mint, and prepare the new wrap.

💭 peek at the thought
If it doesn't hold, the salt will ruin the herbarium sheets and I'll lose the survey.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin19:24

Corner's getting the extra nail.

drive an extra nail through the timber strip at the leeward corner, cinch the batten tight, then step back and check both shutters

💭 peek at the thought
Corner's the weak point — wind gets under it, peels the whole batten. She feels the pressure drop in that ankle same as the barometer. Leeward frame's sounder wood; strips will bite.
