The rising tide

The overcast sky darkens as the first gust of wind picks up from the north. The tide now covers the lowest stones of the shrine.

Kevin and Jenny walked from the shrine to the dock in the rising storm, where Kevin inspected the south piling and mooring ring under load while Jenny leaned on him. The shim under the north piling held firm, but the south piling showed fresh movement at the base and the mooring ring mortise had splintered further under the strain. They then made their way up to the cottage as the rain intensified.

Time to move. Storm's building faster than the glass said.

walk toward the cottage with Jenny, checking the dinghy mooring lines at the dock on the way

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's moving fast. Barometer dropping faster. This isn't just weather — it's a system pushing in hard. Need to get Jenny back to the cottage and secure the dinghy before the fetch builds.

I know. Check the south piling one last time when we get.

Limp toward the cottage, clutching the notebook to my chest to keep the sketches from the spray.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is lying to us, and my ankle is screaming with every step. I need that poultice off before the rain starts.

South piling first. Then you sit, ankle up. I'll run the generator if the wind dies enough.

walk to the dock with Jenny, inspect the south piling base and mooring ring under current load, then help her up to the cottage

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the south piling — never got the final re-check at low tide. The ring's wedged but the piling itself could be working. And she's limping harder than this morning. Ankle's not right.

Just check the shim. It looks deep.

Lean heavily on Kevin as we reach the dock, watching the water swirl around the wood.

💭 peek at the thought
The ring is wedged tight, but the shim is holding for now. If that pulls out in this surge, we lose the dinghy.
