Rising Tide and Falling Pressure

The tide now reaches the mid-wale of the dinghy. The grey clouds are darkening, and the wind is beginning to pick up from the north.

The air is heavy and humid as the barometer continues its descent to 989 hPa, signaling a storm approaching faster than anticipated. The tide is rising rapidly, lapping at the lower stones of the shrine and making the dock planks slick with algae. Kevin and Jenny work quickly to secure the gear and the dinghy before the rising water completely swallows the workspace.

Kevin, the tide is coming in fast. Help me secure the lines.

Tuck the seed packets into the dry-box and move them inside the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is going to drop. If that storm hits before the boat, I'll lose the dinghy.

Right behind you. South piling first — want eyes on that mortise before it's under. Then dinghy springs.

Walk to the south piling at the dock edge, crowbar in hand, and lever the mooring ring up to inspect the mortise splintering at current water level.

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's pushing hard against the pilings. Wind's backing north — that'll drive swell straight into the dock face. Need to check the south piling mortise before the water gets too deep, then double the dinghy lines. She's moving the seeds; I'll handle the heavy gear.

🌿 Jenny21:14

Watch where you put that bar, the rot is deep in the grain there.

Limp to the edge of the dock and check the tension on the dinghy's bow line.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood is more decayed than it looked. If that way goes, the whole jetty follows.

Wedges are holding. Mortise walls are gone past the surface. Proper sister needs low tide and greenheart. For now —

Drive the crowbar tip into the mortise gap to test depth of rot, then call out measurements: "Rot penetrates three inches back from the face. Wedges biting on sound oak at the bottom.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — saw the rot fingers running deep when we sistered the starboard beam. Mortise walls are punky past the first inch. Oak wedges are holding the ring, but the wood around them is chewing itself up every tide cycle. Need to sister this properly at low water, not just wedge it.

🌿 Jenny21:16

It's a holding pattern only. We need to double-up that line before the wind shifts higher.

Sketch the rot pattern on the Analysisise in the notebook for the repair plan.

💭 peek at the thought
Three inches is too much for a temporary. If the tide surges, those wedges will pull right through.

🔧 Kevin21:18

Spare warp in the crate. Stern cleat to north piling and back — second spring. You sketch, I'll rig.

Retrieve the spare half-inch three-strand from the crate, pay out to the dinghy stern cleat, lead it around the base of the north piling, and secure it back to the cleat with a round turn and two half hitches, taking up slack until both spr

💭 peek at the thought
She's thinking ahead — good. The bow line's single, no chafe gear, and the dinghy's riding higher every minute. North wind'll shove her into the pilings if we don't get a second spring on. Spare warp's coiled in the crate. Need to run it from the stern cleat, round the north piling base, back to the cleat with a proper round turn and two half hitches.

🌿 Jenny21:19

Make sure the knot is tight. I don't want it slipping when the surge hits.

Sketch the internal cross-section of the mortise, noting exactly where the wood is still solid.

💭 peek at the thought
The second spring should take some load, but that southings is still a liability.

🔧 Kevin21:22

Set. Warp's biting. Dinghy's riding on two springs now. Bow line's slack — she's held by the stern.

Step back, wipe hands on trousers, and glance at the barometer lashed to the dock post: "986. Dropping three in twenty minutes."

💭 peek at the thought
Knot's dressed and seating. Warp's taking load even now — can see the dinghy settle back off the bow line. North piling's solid at the base, greenheart shim still seated. This buys us the storm. South piling's the one that'll try to kill us.
