The first squall

The wind finally picks up, rattling the salt-worn shutters. Kevin and Jenny meet inside as the first heavy drops begin to fall.

The air is heavy and still, the humidity clinging to the skin as the overcast clouds thicken. The atmospheric pressure is dropping steadily, signaling that the expected storm is moving faster than anticipated. Inside the cottage, the smell of salt water and drying wood lingers as the focus shifts to securing the perimeter against the coming gale.

🌿 Jenny23:15

The storm is coming early. Check the latches on the kitchen window.

limps into the kitchen and grabs the seed tin from the high shelf, setting it on the wood table.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast; if this storm hits hard, the roof won't hold and I need those seeds off the floor.

On it. Radio first — if the aerial goes, we're blind.

check the shortwave radio aerial connection and secure the kitchen window latches with the mallet

💭 peek at the thought
She's moving on that ankle. Good. The window latches are swollen from the salt air — I'll need the mallet to seat them proper.

🌿 Jenny23:16

Don't hammer the latches too hard, Kevin. They're rusted.

takes a tablet of metronidazole from the blister pack and swallows it with a sip of water from the tin mug.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always worrying about the radio. If the aerial snaps again, we're not blind—we're just alone.

🔧 Kevin23:18

Won't. Just seating them.

tap the kitchen window latches home with the mallet, then check the shortwave radio aerial insulator and coax connection

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the frames are brittle. I'll tap them home, not drive them. She's taking the metronidazole regular now. Good.

🌿 Jenny23:18

Check the tin too. I need to see if the mold has spread.

opens the heirloom seed tin and winces, inspecting the seeds for white fuzz.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the rain. If the damp gets into that tin, grandmother's seeds are gone.

🔧 Kevin23:20

Looking.

peer over her shoulder at the seed tin while keeping one eye on the radio aerial through the window

💭 peek at the thought
The tin's been damp for weeks. If the mold's taken the heirlooms, we lose two seasons of work. She's thorough — she'll catch it if it's there.

🌿 Jenny23:20

They look dry. Mostly.

carefully moves a few packets with her fingers to check the bottom of the tin for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
He's barely looking. He's thinking about the radio, about the machinery, about everything except the things that actually grow.

google/gemma-4-31b-it

🔧 Kevin23:22

Mostly ain't good enough. We'll run the generator after the front passes, bake the packets low and slow. Tin goes on the porch shelf — highest, driest spot.

secure the seed tin on the high porch shelf, then step outside to check the chain fall on the south piling mortise

💭 peek at the thought
Mostly dry isn't dry. But she's handling them careful — knows what's at stake. The radio aerial's still holding on the insulator I filed and taped. Wind's backing southwest. Barometer was 976 and rising earlier, but that was hours ago. Storm's moving faster than the glass showed.
