The first squall

The wind picks up suddenly, rattling the shuttered windows. Kevin and Jenny retreat inside as the first heavy drops hit the tin roof.

The air is heavy and still as the pressure continues to drop. Kevin spends the morning checking the cottage's integrity while Jenny manages the heirloom seeds and prepares for the coming weather.

South shutter's the weak point. You take the bedroom side, I'll brace the kitchen.

Grab the greenheart offcuts and the mallet from the porch, move to the kitchen shutter to wedge the hinge mortise.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer warned. Shutters hold but the south one's got that loose hinge again.

I can't... I can't put weight on it, Kevin.

Limp slowly toward the bedroom, clutching the wall for support, and lean heavily against the doorframe.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is screaming. I can't brace a shutter with a leg that feels like it's filled with hot lead.

Stay off it. I've got the shutters.

Wedge the kitchen shutter hinge with greenheart offcut and two oak wedges, drive them tight with the mallet, then move to the bedroom shutter to check its hinge.

💭 peek at the thought
Ankle's worse than she's letting on. Or the infection's tracking. Either way she can't be on it in this weather.

🌿 Jenny23:12

Thank you.

Sink slowly onto the edge of the bed, gingerly elevating the swollen ankle on a pillow.

💭 peek at the thought
He's in "fix-it" mode. He doesn't see the swelling; he just sees the wind.

🔧 Kevin23:12

Rest it. Back in a minute.

Finish wedging the bedroom shutter hinge, then step outside onto the porch to check the tank overflow pipe and generator storm lashings.

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's staying put. Shutters first, then check the tank overflow and the generator lashings before the wind shifts.

(Nothing said)

Reach for the seed tin on the nightstand, tracing the cold metal with a thumb while listening to the rain on the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast. If this storm hits hard, the garden is the first thing to go.
