Preparing for the Tide

The tide is nearing its lowest, revealing the waterlogged crate near the dock. The wind is picking up from the east.

Kevin tested the waterlogged crate at the dock and found its bottom rotted through, with contents shifting inside; he abandoned the lift and returned to the cottage. Jenny changed her ankle dressing, checked the water tank, and walked to the north cliffs to sketch sea beet leaves.

🔧 Kevin02:00

Kevin — walk down to the dock and assess the waterlogged crate at low tide.

💭 peek at the thought
Crate's been sitting in the surf for days. Low tide's the only chance to drag it up before the swell picks up again. Need to check what's inside — could be supplies, could be junk. Either way, it's not doing any good floating there.

Be careful, the wood is saturated, it'll give.

pick up the pencil and continue sketching the veins of the sea beet leaves.

💭 peek at the thought
If he touches that crate with wet hands, he'll just spread the rot into the wood.

🔧 Kevin02:03

I'll test it first. Not stepping on anything that doesn't hold.

Approach the crate at the dock's edge, probe the wood with the crowbar to check structural integrity before attempting to move it.

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong — salt-rotten timber crumbles under weight. But that crate's been knocking against the pilings every tide cycle. If it breaks up, we lose whatever's inside and the dock takes a beating. Worth the risk if I'm smart about it.

🌿 Jenny02:03

Don't pry too hard, the grain is soft as mush.

lean back against the porch post, watching him through the throbbing pain in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too aggressive with that crowbar; he'll split the wood right open.

🔧 Kevin02:04

I'll lift from underneath, keep it level. If it sags, I'll stop.

Slide the crowbar under the crate's lowest edge, brace my feet on the wet dock planks, and lift slowly to test if the base holds.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching — not just out of concern, but because she knows I won't walk away from something that needs doing. The crate's waterlogged, heavy, and the wood's shot through. Pry too hard and I'll tear it open, spilling god-knows-what into the surf. But if I can get a grip under the rail and lift slow, I might slide it onto the dock before the tide turns.

🌿 Jenny02:05

Wait—look at the corner. It's weeping.

lean forward, squinting at the seam where the wood meets the weight.

💭 peek at the thought
If that bottom snaps, the grandmother's seeds are lost to the salt.

🔧 Kevin02:06

Seen it. Bottom's probably gone soft too.

Ease the crowbar out, then crouch to inspect the crate's bottom and corner seams up close — check how far the rot goes and whether the contents are shifting inside.

💭 peek at the thought
She's got better eyes than me sometimes. Weeping at the corner means the seams have opened — salt and swell have worked the caulking loose. Whatever's inside has been marinating in seawater. Could be ruined. Could be tins, same as the last crate. Either way, lifting it whole just got riskier. If the bottom falls out, I'm fishing wet cardboard out of the surf.

🌿 Jenny02:07

Don't move it yet. We need a tarp under it first.

stand up slowly, wincing as the weight shifts on my ankle, and head for the plastic sheeting.

💭 peek at the thought
If the bottom falls out, the whole thing will spill into the tide pools.
