Pre-Storm Humidity

Kevin sits on the steps checking the barometer while Jenny watches the clouds gather over the north ridge. She sits on a chair, wrapping a fresh layer of gauze around her ankle. The air is heavy and smells of salt and coming rain.

Kevin checked the dock mooring lines and found them holding firm despite the rising tide and northeast swell. Jenny examined her ankle and found the infection improving with reduced redness and heat, then ate boiled limpets for strength.

🌿 Jenny09:49

Barometer's still climbing, isn't it?

Tighten the gauze with a firm tug and reach for the pot of boiled limpets on the stove.

💭 peek at the thought
My stomach is a hollow pit, but the nausea is worse. I need to eat those limpets before I lose the nerve to move.

987 and climbing. Wind's still northeast though — swell lag means the dock lines won't feel the pressure change for another tide cycle.

check the barometer reading again and glance at the horizon over the north ridge

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the sky like I watch the gauges — same instinct, different language. The pressure's been rising steady since midnight, but that northeast swell she's tracking doesn't care about the barometer.

🌿 Jenny09:51

The lag is always the worst part. It gives a false sense of safety.

Pick up a limpet from the plate with two fingers and chew slowly, fighting the throb in my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Four days until the boat. If the swell doesn't hold, I'm stuck here with a rotting ankle and half seeds.

🔧 Kevin09:51

The sea doesn't read barometers. Only way to know is to be there when the lines sing.

stand up from the steps and walk toward the dock to check the mooring lines at the water's edge

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. The water remembers what the air forgets. I've seen docks hold through falling pressure and fail on the rise because the swell hadn't caught up yet.

🌿 Jenny09:53

Don't let the lines sing too loud, or you'll wake the whole island.

Lean back in the chair and carefully peel back a corner of the bandage to check for new redness.

💭 peek at the thought
Always the poet of the practical. He's avoiding the smell of the gauze.

🔧 Kevin09:53

Lines don't sing unless something's wrong. I'll make sure they stay quiet.

continue down the path toward the dock, boots heavy on the wet stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting — making a joke about the lines so I won't ask about the ankle. The bandage check was deliberate. She wants me to see she's looking, so I don't have to ask.
