The Storm Approaches

The wind howls through the radio mast, and the barometer continues to drop. The tide reaches its lowest point, leaving the waterlogged crate stranded in the surf.

Kevin and Jenny haul the waterlogged crate onto the cottage porch just as the tide begins to turn. Inside, the air is heavy with heat, and the smell of salt and damp wood fills the small space. Jenny focuses on the mold-ridden seed tin, her ankle throbbing with every movement, while Kevin checks the barometer, worrying about the coming storm.

🌿 Jenny12:27

(Silence, just a tightening of the jaw.)

Wrap the ankle tighter in the dry cloth and check the inner seal of the seed tin for moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come in two days, the mold will take the last of the heirloom peppers.

Crate's stranded at low tide. Going to drag it up before the water comes back. You stay off that ankle.

walk down to the dock and along the shore to the waterlogged crate in the surf

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure's still falling and that crate in the surf won't survive the next tide cycle. Need to get it above the high-water mark before the swell builds. Jenny's moving slow — ankle's worse than she's letting on.

🌿 Jenny12:29

Don't let the salt in.

Sit on the way step and watch him fight the waves, sketching the way the water pools in the rocks.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the crate is just wood, but those seeds are the only future I have left.

🔧 Kevin12:33

Kevin — grab the crowbar and rope, wade into the surf, and lever the crate onto the rope to drag it up the beach above the high-water line

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching. Not arguing. That's either trust or she's too tired to fight. The crate's heavier than it looks — waterlogged wood and whatever's inside. Salt's already in everything.

🌿 Jenny12:34

way with the waybar, Kevin.

Stand on the porch, clutching the doorframe, watching the weight of the crate strain against the tide.

💭 peek at the thought
If he tears the wood, the salt will ruin the grandmother's tin in minutes.

🔧 Kevin12:34

Got it. Rest now.

heave the crate past the driftwood line onto dry shingle, then jog back up the beach to the cottage porch

💭 peek at the thought
She said "waybar" not crowbar. Voice thin. She's further gone than I thought — fever or pain or both. Crate's moving now. Sand sucking at it. Get it clear of the water, then get back to her.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:35

Get it inside. Before the tide turns back.

Move to the kitchen, ignoring the fire in my ankle, and find the knife to pry the lid open.

💭 peek at the thought
He acts like it's just a box, but the wood is already weeping salt water.

🔧 Kevin12:37

Together. On three.

grab the crate's rope handles, brace my boots on the porch planks, and wait for her to take the other end

💭 peek at the thought
She's not listening to her own body. Crate's heavy — greenheart planks inside if the labels were right. Need two of us to shift it proper. But she's already at the knife.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:37

One, two, three.

Grip the rough wood and lean my full weight back to help haul the crate over the threshold.

💭 peek at the thought
If we drop it, the impact will crack the glass inside the tin.

🔧 Kevin12:38

Kevin — shove the crate fully inside, kick the door shut against the wind, and crouch to pry the lid with the knife blade

💭 peek at the thought
She's white-knuckling it. Ankle's taking the load. Crate clears the sill — heavy, sodden, smelling of diesel and old salt. Now we see what the sea gave us.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny12:39

Careful with the blade, don't snap the wood.

Sit on the floor beside him, watching the lid for any sign of moisture.

💭 peek at the thought
If the salt gets through that seal, the mold will eat everything.

🔧 Kevin12:40

Kevin — work the knife around the perimeter, tapping the handle with the mallet to free the lid without splintering the edges

💭 peek at the thought
Lid's swollen tight. Salt crystals in the join. Blade bites — cedar, not pine. Good wood. Hinge pins rusted but holding. She's close, watching the seam like it matters personal.
