The Storm Breaks

The wind picks up significantly, lashing against the cottage as the first heavy drops of rain finally hit the roof.

The rain has intensified into a heavy downpour, drumming against the cottage roof as the wind shifts to the west. Inside, the air is thick with the smell of damp wood and the medicinal scent of the sea beet poultice. The tide is pulling out, exposing the rocks near the dock, but the falling pressure continues to signal a worsening storm ahead.

🌿 Jenny12:20

Jenny — wrap the ankle tightly in a clean cloth and move the seed tin under the bed for safety from the damp.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm is coming faster than the own suggested. If the roof leaks again, the seeds are lost.

Door won't latch. Wedging it now.

walk to the porch door, pull the cedar wedge from my pocket, drive it into the hinge mortise with the heel of my hand, test the door — solid, no rattle.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing west-southwest. Rain's horizontal now. Shutter held but the porch door's next — frame's swollen, latch won't catch. Need to wedge it before the gusts hit forty.

🌿 Jenny12:21

Make sure it holds tight.

Sit on the edge of the bed and watch the rain hit the window, clutching my throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
At least one thing is fixed. I need to make sure the tin stays dry.

🔧 Kevin12:23

It holds.

turn back into the kitchen, pull the kettle from the stove, set it on the table, pour two mugs of the hot water from the pot, slide one across to her without a word.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the window, not me. Ankle's still throbbing under the wrap. She doesn't ask about the barometer or the boat. Just the door.

🌿 Jenny12:23

Thanks.

Take the mug with both hands, letting the warmth seep into my palms while watching the tin under the bed.

💭 peek at the thought
He doesn't even look at the leg. way the tea. Always the tea.

🔧 Kevin12:25

Tin's safer on the kitchen shelf. Damp rises.

finish my mug in two swallows, set it down, walk to the bedroom, crouch, pull the seed tin from under the bed, carry it to the kitchen, set it on the top shelf beside the radio, wipe condensation from the lid with my sleeve.

💭 peek at the thought
Tin's under the bed, dry for now. But the floorboards breathe. If the foundation leak reaches the bedroom wall, the damp'll climb. Should move it to the top shelf in the kitchen — higher, drier, near the stove warmth.

🌿 Jenny12:25

Put it somewhere dry.

Lean back against the headboard, rubbing the swelling on my ankle while listening to the rain hit the roof.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the damp. If those seeds rot, my grandmother's legacy is gone.

🔧 Kevin12:27

Done. Top shelf by the stove.

lean against the doorframe, arms crossed, watch the rain slash the porch boards sideways, listen to the wind find the gaps in the stonework.

💭 peek at the thought
She's saying it like I didn't just do it. Pain's making her foggy, or she didn't see. Either way, it's done. Top shelf, stove heat, radio shelf — driest spot in the cottage.
