Low Tide and Rising Pressure

Kevin works at the dock pilings as the tide recedes to expose the salt-crusted crate. Jenny sits on a dry bench nearby, her ankle elevated while she watches the barometer needle drop further.

The tide pulls back, exposing the salt-crusted wood of the heavy crate. Kevin toges the crowbar into the gap of the lid, straining as the dock groans under the shifting weight. Jenny watches the waterline marks, her hand resting on the seed tin in her pocket to ensure they remain dry. A jellyfish bloom drifts slowly into the bay, pale and ghostly in the grey water.

Need a hand with the crate once it clears, or you good watching the needle?

walk to the dock edge and test the crate's weight with a boot nudge, checking how much tide's left to drop before it's free

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's still falling and she's watching it instead of her ankle. She knows something's coming.

The tide is doing the work. Just make sure the planks don't give under you.

Sketch the pattern of the rot on the nearest own in the margin of my notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
He's worried about the wood while I'm worried about the pressure in my leg.

Planks held last storm. They'll hold this one.

crouch at the crate's edge, wedge the crowbar under the salt-crusted lid, and wait for the water to pull back another foot before prying

💭 peek at the thought
She's mapping the rot while I work. Smart — gives us a record for the next repair, keeps her mind off the pressure dropping.

🌿 Jenny00:12

If it breaks, we're losing the supplies for the next season.

Reach for the seed tin in my pocket to ensure the grandmother's seeds are still dry.

💭 peek at the thought
He's always so sure of the wood while the salt is eating the heart out.

🔧 Kevin00:13

Tin's dry. Wrapped it myself. You're mapping rot that won't matter if the crate takes the dock with it.

brace the crowbar against the dock stringer, wait for the swell to dip, then heave the lid — slow, letting pressure equalize so the wood doesn't shatter

💭 peek at the thought
She's checking my pocket for her seeds instead of her own ankle. The barometer's at 992 and she's thinking about next season's planting.

🌿 Jenny00:15

I could have wrapped it myself.

Lean forward to watch the gap in the wood, checking for any sign of water inside.

💭 peek at the thought
He wrapped the tin? He didn't say that six months ago.

🔧 Kevin00:15

Hands were shaking. Paper tears wet.

the lid gives with a wet suck — peer into the grey gap, checking for waterline marks on the interior walls before hauling it wider

💭 peek at the thought
She's not wrong. But her hands were shaking yesterday and the salt air eats paper fast. She knows that too.

🌿 Jenny00:17

Just get it off the jetty. The wind is picking up.

Stand up slowly, wincing at the throb in my ankle to get closer to him.

💭 peek at the thought
If the paper is wet, the seeds are gone before they even hit soil.
