Evening Fever Watch

Kevin helps Jenny to the edge of the ridge as the rain slows, but the barometer continues to drop as the storm approaches.

Kevin and Jenny descended from the old shrine to the cottage in the grey evening, Jenny leaning heavily on Kevin with her infected ankle and high fever. They reached the cottage porch as darkness fell, the barometer steady at 997 hPa.

🌿 Jenny00:45

The air is too heavy... we need to get back to the cottage, now.

Lean heavily on Kevin's shoulder, shifting my weight away from my burning ankle as we limp back down the slope.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is making the world blur, but I need to see if the shrine is still standing before the wind turns.

Slow. I've got you. Watch the loose stone on the left — step to the right of it.

brace Jenny's weight on my shoulder, scan the slope for stable footing, guide her down the ridge toward the cottage one deliberate step at a time

💭 peek at the thought
Her ankle can't take this descent in wet grass and loose stone. One misstep and we're both down. Need to move slow, keep weight on me, watch every foot placement.

I know... just don't let me fall.

way the fabric of his shirt with a trembling hand, breathing in shallow ragged gasps as I drag my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
Every step feels like a hot needle being pressed into my calf; I can't breathe with the air this thick.

🔧 Kevin00:48

Not letting go. Next step — flat rock ahead, put your weight on it.

shift grip to wrap arm secure around her waist, plant boots carefully on the wet grass, guide her onto the flat rock she can't see through the rain

💭 peek at the thought
Her grip's white-knuckled. Fever's riding her hard. Every step down this slope is a risk but staying up here in the open when the barometer's still falling is worse. Cottage has the meds, the dry bed, the roof. Just need to get her there.

🌿 Jenny00:49

Okay... okay, I'm down.

sink onto the rock, letting my head drop against his chest as I fight to stop shaking.

💭 peek at the thought
The rock is cold, but my leg is fire; I can feel the heat pulsing through the bone.

🔧 Kevin00:49

Rest. Thirty seconds. I'm not moving.

hold her steady against me, one hand on the back of her neck, eyes scanning the slope below for the least treacherous line through the grass and stone

💭 peek at the thought
She's burning through her reserves. Can't stop here — the cottage is still twenty minutes of bad ground, and the wind's picking up. But she needs thirty seconds to breathe. Let her have it.

🌿 Jenny00:51

It's so hot, Kevin. Is the boat coming?

squeeze my eyes shut, fingers bunching in the fabric of his jacket as I breathe through a wave of nausea.

💭 peek at the thought
My heart is thumping in my ears like a trapped bird; the red lines are moving higher.

🔧 Kevin00:51

Boat's not coming in this. Four days out at best. We've got stores, water, meds. We manage.

keep holding her, thumb rubbing slow circles at the base of her skull, waiting for her breathing to settle before we move again

💭 peek at the thought
Supply boat's due in four days if it runs on time. Storm's moving in now — barometer still dropping. No chance it makes the crossing in this. She knows that. She's asking because the fever's talking, or because she needs to hear me say we'll manage without it.
