← Day 582

the keeper's cottage · day 582 · night

Night watch and radio silence

The cottage is dark save for the storm lantern burning low on the table. Kevin sits at the radio desk, headphones on, listening to static on Tom's frequency. Jenny lies on the cot, ankle elevated on a folded blanket, the heirloom seed tin within reach. The barometer holds at 999 hPa. Outside, the sea is a black mirror reflecting no stars.

Kevin and Jenny spend the evening in the cottage as the tide recedes. Jenny's fever has broken, but her ankle remains swollen despite the poultice. They quietly prepare for the supply boat arrival in two days.

…

adjust the RF gain down, pull the logbook closer, write in pencil: "0200Z — no contact on 6215. Barometer 999 steady. Wind SW 8-10. Both alive."

💭 peek at the thought
The static's been clean for three hours. No skip, no atmospherics — just the receiver's own noise floor. Either the propagation's dead or he's not transmitting. I should've sent the QSL weeks ago.

You're going to give yourself a headache listening to that noise.

Reach out and touch the cool metal of the seed tin, fingers tracing the 'E'.

💭 peek at the thought
He's recording our existence like we're just another set of coordinates. "Both alive." How clinical.

Headache's already here. Comes with the frequency.

lift the headphones off, let them hang around my neck, reach for the tin mug of cold tea beside the logbook

💭 peek at the thought
She hears it too. The static gets inside your skull after a while — high-pitched hiss at the edge of hearing. She's right. But if I stop listening, I have to think about what I'm not hearing.

🌿 Jenny02:47

Drink some water instead. The tea's cold.

Shift slightly on the cot, wincing as the ankle throbs.

💭 peek at the thought
He's exhausted. Or he's just retreating into the static because it's easier than talking to me.

🔧 Kevin02:49

Water's in the basin. Warm now.

push the tin mug aside, pour from the enamel pitcher into a clean mug, set it on the desk within her reach

💭 peek at the thought
She's been wincing less the last two days. The red line up her calf hasn't advanced since the last lancing. Metronidazole's doing its work. Still — she shouldn't be moving it much.

🌿 Jenny02:49

Thank you.

Lean forward and take the mug, sipping the water slowly.

💭 peek at the thought
He's doing that thing again. Taking care of the physical requirements while avoiding the actual person.
