Shared breakfast and supply boat delay

Rain hammers the porch roof. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with tin mugs of limpet broth and corned beef fat. The trust letter lies between them — supply boat delayed two days. The barometer still reads 1000 hPa. The crate inventory is done. Tin E sits sealed under the tarp on the porch. The garden shade cloth flaps in the west wind.

Kevin attempted to secure the tarp over the heirloom seed tin as the wind tugged at the northwest corner. Jenny hobbled across the porch to help, but her ankle pain made her movements slow and ineffective. A seabird chick fell from the cliff ledges, landing awkwardly in the grass below.

Two days late, Kevin. We need to check the radio again tomorrow morning.

Rub the throbbing in my ankle and stare at the rain-streaked window.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the manifest like the numbers will bail us out, but the sea is just rising.

🔧 Kevin03:09

Aye. First light. If the skipper's got a working set we'll hear him. If not —" shrug "— we'll know when the horn sounds off the north cliffs.

finish the broth, set the mug down, and walk to the porch to check the tarp over seed tin E

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer holding at 1000. Wind's backed west — not southwest yet. Boat's two days out if she's running. Radio check won't hurt but the aerial's still shattered. Should've fixed it proper when the spare insulator came off the crate.

🌿 Jenny03:09

Don't just check the tarp. Make sure the weights are still holding the edges. The wind is shifting west.

Lean back in the chair and watch him through the screen door, clutching my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He's treating the tin like a fragile egg. I'm the one who knows what's actually inside it.

🔧 Kevin03:10

Already on it.

step onto the porch, crouch at the tarp covering seed tin E, and test each corner batten — north edge first, then work around — tightening the heavy-duty twine where the oak stakes have shifted

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. West wind gets under the porch overhang different than southwest. The timber battens on the north edge were loose last storm.

🌿 Jenny03:12

The northwest corner's pulling loose again. We need to drive another stake before the wind catches it. The northwest corner's pulling loose. We need another stake before the wind catches it.

Get up slowly, wincing, and shuffle across the porch to where the tarp's edge hangs unbothered. </think>THOUGHT: He's still fixing what's broken instead of planting what could grow.

💭 peek at the thought
He's still performing repairs instead of building something new. The oak stakes won't hold against a real gale.

🔧 Kevin03:12

Got it. Hand me the mallet and a fresh stake from the pile by the woodshed.

pull the loose batten taut, drive a new oak stake eighteen inches in at a steeper angle, re-secure the twine with a taut-line hitch, and check the other three corners while I'm at it

💭 peek at the thought
Northwest corner's the problem every blow. Oak stake there's in soft ground — rain makes it worse. She's favouring the ankle bad today. Should've driven the stake deeper last time.

🌿 Jenny03:14

Leave the stakes. I can't keep hobbling around the porch just to watch you tie knots.

Turn away from him and walk back to the table to pick up the trust letter.

💭 peek at the thought
He's efficient, I'll give him that. But he's just securing a box of ghosts while the garden is still half-weeds.
