A Quiet Stretch
Back at the cottage.
The air in the cottage is heavy with the scent of drying mint and the metallic tang of the stove. Outside, the sky thickens into a flat, oppressive grey that promises a change in the heat. The tide is retreating, exposing the slick rocks of the tide pools, while the floorboards of the cottage remain damp from the persistent leak in the shutter. The supply boat's arrival tomorrow is a shadow over the rising barometer.
Jenny — sit on the kitchen chair, prop the swollen ankle on a stool, and sketch the pattern of the clouds moving through the window.

Yes. Please. Black.
Pour myself into the chair, letting my body settle back against the wood. Watch Kevin pour coffee into tin mugs, then reach for the notebook on the shelf. make sketch: "Kitchen Cloud Study - Day 583"

(pours coffee into two tin mugs, sets one beside her sketchbook) Barometer's holding at 1005. Rising slow. If she holds, boat's tomorrow mid-morning.
sit at the table opposite her with my mug, watching the steam curl into the lamplight

I hope so. Tomorrow.
Take the warm mug, wrapping both hands around the tin to soothe my fingers. Open the notebook to a fresh page and start drawing the morphology of the sea much leaves I used earlier.
