Evening at the shrine

Kevin and Jenny walk the ridge path together as the light thins, the barometer rising steady in the cottage behind them. The stone ring on the ridge is quiet, the carved initials 'LB' shadowed in the low sun. They carry a tin of corned beef and two mugs, the path muddy underfoot from yesterday's rain.

Kevin and Jenny ate corned beef at the old shrine while the barometer held steady at 990 hPa. Kevin examined Jenny's detailed sketch of succulent salt glands in her notebook. They discussed the Yanmar's prop shaft sleeve and the failing aerial insulator before parting for their evening tasks.

Barometer's holding. Wind's dropped to nothing.

Walk to the nearest stone in the ring, set the tin and mugs down on its flat top, and sit on the damp grass with my back to the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The ridge stones are cold against my palm. LB — Laurence Baines, the last keeper before the light was automated. Died here in '63. I've traced these initials a dozen times and still don't know why it matters.

The pressure doesn't lie. We're good for tonight.

Open the notebook and begin sketching the lichen patterns on the weathered stones.

💭 peek at the thought
He's actually looking at the sky for once instead of the engine block.

🔧 Kevin07:47

You'll have the definitive guide to Sorrel Island lichen by the time the boat comes.

Pry the corned beef tin open with the key, the metal sighing as the seal breaks, and hold it out toward her.

💭 peek at the thought
She sketches like she's documenting evidence. Lichen patterns on shrine stones. Tide pool salinity. Sea beet morphology. Building a record of a place we're meant to leave.

🌿 Jenny07:48

Just make sure we eat it before it gets cold.

Take a piece of beef with the fork and watch the clouds bruise over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come, the guide becomes an obituary.

🔧 Kevin07:48

It's corned beef. Cold improves it.

Spear a chunk on my own fork, eat it standing, and glance at the barometer reading through the cottage window — 990 and steady.

💭 peek at the thought
She's watching the weather like I do. Not like a visitor anymore.

🌿 Jenny07:49

Everything is a matter of calories with you, Kevin.

Chew the beef and focus on the salt areas of the succulent leaf in my sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks everything is a matter of calories.

🔧 Kevin07:50

Calories and the sleeve holding. Two things I know for certain.

Sit down on the grass beside her stone, fork in hand, and look at what she's drawing — the succulent's salt glands, magnified in ink.

💭 peek at the thought
Calories keep the engine running. She draws what the island looks like. Different currencies.

🌿 Jenny07:51

The sleeve is only holding because the humidity slowed the rust.

Shade the edge of the leaf in the notebook, capturing the texture of the waxy skin.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's sitting still for once.
