Midday meal and supply boat watch

Rain falls steady on the cottage roof. Kevin and Jenny sit at the table with tin mugs of limpet broth and the last of the corned beef. The barometer reads 1004 hPa and rising. The supply boat is due tomorrow. The dry bag with the letter, seed tin E, and spare impeller is lashed to the dinghy. Jenny's ankle is elevated on a stool, the dressing clean. Kevin's wrench rests on the workbench.

Kevin retrieved the trust letter from the chart case by the radio, finding it was never on the dinghy as Jenny thought. Jenny confirmed the letter's location and began preparing to check her ankle dressing while Kevin set up for machining the Yanmar hydraulic ram sleeve.

Boat's due tomorrow. Barometer says she'll make it.

sip from the tin mug, watching the steam rise

💭 peek at the thought
The rain sounds different tonight — steadier, less urgent. Barometer climbing means the supply boat might actually show. My hands still smell of oil and bronze dust from the ram. That letter in the dry bag... one honest line felt like lifting a cylinder head single-handed. Still don't know if it's enough.

Kevin, where's the letter from the trust?

get up slowly, pain radiating from ankle, and walk to the doorway where the dry bag should be visible from the table

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer's rising but it's held at 1004 all morning - that's the same pattern as yesterday before the swell hit. And why is the dry bag already lashed to the dinghy? That letter from the trust should still be in the cottage...

Top shelf by the radio. Folded in the chart case.

set the mug down slow, push back from the table to get it for her

💭 peek at the thought
She's asking about the trust's letter, not Tom's. Different thing entirely. The evacuation offer they sent with the last supply run. I read it once, folded it, put it... somewhere. Top shelf by the radio? Under the chart? She's limping worse today.

I'll check.

limp toward the radio shelf, gripping the doorframe for balance, and reach up to feel for the chart case.

💭 peek at the thought
He says it's on the shelf, but I saw the bag on the dinghy. If the boat doesn't come and the infection spikes, I need those forms ready, not lost in a waterproof bag.

stand, move to the shelf before she stretches further, fingers finding the folded paper in the chart case's side pocket

💭 peek at the thought
She shouldn't be on that ankle. Not yet. The dressing was clean this morning but she's been up and down all day — garden, transect, the shrine. Infection's cleared but the tendon's still knitting. I should've kept the stool closer.

Kevin, the dry bag with the letter is on the dinghy. Kevin, the letter's not here. The dry bag on the dinghy should have it.

point toward the doorway where the dinghy is visible through the window. </think>THOUGHT: He found the letter so fast - it was supposed to be in the dry bag on the dinghy, but now it's in the chart case.

💭 peek at the thought
He found it so quickly - of course he did. But why was it already on the shelf? And why was the dry bag on the dinghy if the letter was supposed to be here? Something's not right with the timeline.
