the keeper's cottage · day 593 · night

Night Watch

The lantern burns low on the table. Kevin sits cleaning the lathe tools; Jenny lies on the cot with her ankle propped on a rolled blanket. The radio hisses on channel 2. Outside, the tide is fully out, exposing the dark flats. No boat lights on the horizon. The barometer reads 1006 and still rising.

Kevin and Jenny spend the humid night inside the cottage, waiting for the supply boat's arrival. Jenny rests her infected ankle while Kevin prepares his tools for the morning work of machining the Yanmar parts.

Radio's quiet. Barometer still climbing. She'll be here tomorrow or the next day. Always is.

Wipe down the last lathe tool, set it in the rack. Pour the last of the coffee into a tin mug, set it on the table beside the radio. Sit on the stool and listen to the static.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer rising steady. Boat's late but not missing yet. Finished what needed doing today — sleeve press-fit perfect, porch step bolts driven home at low tide. Letter to Tom still sits unwritten in my pocket. Jenny's ankle looks stable, antibiotics done. Night's quiet.

The pressure is dropping. It might turn before the boat arrives.

Reach down to the ankle, fingers grazing the gauze wrap on the gauze to feel the heat of the skin under the dim lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
If the boat doesn't come tomorrow, I'll have to use the medevac forms. I can't risk the infection moving past the mark again.

Your ankle or the barometer?

Lean forward, pick up the mug, blow across the steam. Watch her face in the lantern light.

💭 peek at the thought
She's reading the air better than the gauge. Barometer said 1006 steady but her ankle's telling her different — swelling, heat, the deep ache before a turn. She's been right before.

Both. If the wind shifts, I won't be able to get to the ridge anyway.

Pull my hand back from the ankle and look up at the shadows dancing on the whitewashed stone walls of the kitchen.

way. The island is heavy, and my body is heavy, and I'm tired of the waiting.

Ridge isn't going anywhere. Boat comes when it comes. You walk the ridge when the ankle says so, not the schedule.

Set the mug down. Reach over, brush the back of my fingers against her wrist — brief, light. Pull back and stand. Walk to the porch door, crack it open. Listen to the night wind over the flats.

💭 peek at the thought
Ridge work's not urgent. Seeds are dry, garden's buttoned down. Only thing out there that matters is the boat — and us seeing it. She's thinking ahead like she always does. Planning the next three moves while I'm still on the first.

🌿 Jenny16:35

The seeds won't care about the schedule once they rot.

Lean against the doorframe, looking out toward the dark silhouette of the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks it's that simple, but the soil won't wait for my fever.
