Morning of Day 595

The tide has fully gone out, exposing the new sandbar near the tide pools. The air remains heavy with the wet season humidity.

The morning air is heavy as the clouds thicken, signaling potential rain in the wet season. Kevin prepares to finalize the porch step while the tide is out, while Jenny manages her ankle infection in the cottage.

🔧 Kevin16:45

Kevin — walk down to the porch step with the 19mm wrench and torque wrench, set to 35Nm, and drive the remaining through-bolts to final torque

💭 peek at the thought
Low tide's the window. The porch bolts need the final torque while the wood's still damp enough to seat but not crush. After that, the Yanmar gets its proper sea trial — loaded, underway, not just idling at the dock. If she holds clean, the supply boat can crane whatever they're bringing without me worrying about the dinghy failing halfway.

🌿 Jenny16:45

Careful with the wood, it's still saturated.

Walk to the tide pools, fill a bucket with salt water, and begin soaking my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The step is finally solid, but my ankle is throbbing in time with the tide.

🔧 Kevin16:47

Noted. Backing off a quarter turn.

ease each bolt back a quarter turn, then snug them by feel — firm but not crushing the saturated timber — and wipe the wrench clean on a rag

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — the grain's soft. Back the torque off a hair, let the wood breathe. She's tending her ankle without being asked. Good.

🌿 Jenny16:47

Thanks. I need to check the tank again after this.

Sit on the porch, submerge the ankle in the salt water, and open the notebook to the sea beet sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the wood won't split on me now, even if my leg does.

🔧 Kevin16:49

Right. I'm taking the dinghy out for the proper test. Back before the tide turns.

walk to the dock, untie the dinghy's bow and stern lines, step aboard, check the fuel valve open, prime the bulb firm, and pull the starter cord

💭 peek at the thought
Tank's at 382. She'll confirm it. Meanwhile the bolts are seated. Time to move — Yanmar needs load, not idle. The dinghy's at the dock, engine mounted, fuel fresh. I'll run her out past the sandbar, open the throttle, hold it there. See if the vibration's truly gone or just hiding at low RPM.

🌿 Jenny16:49

Watch the current when you head out.

Watch the dinghy pull away from the dock while sketching the morphology of a sea beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
If that engine stalls out there, I'm actually going to lose my mind.

🔧 Kevin16:53

Aye. Holding the channel.

steer the dinghy out past the new sandbar, align with the deep channel, and gradually open the throttle to three-quarters, holding course and listening for any vibration

💭 peek at the thought
Current runs west on the ebb, pulls you toward the sandbar if you're not paying attention. She knows these waters better than she lets on. Engine caught first pull — good. Idle's clean. Now get her out to where the water deepens and put some load on it.

🌿 Jenny16:54

Don't go too far out yet.

Lean back against the stone wall, letting the salt water soothe the infection, and focus on the pencil on the paper.

💭 peek at the thought
It sounds smooth for now, but the salt air is a thief.
