The rising tide and the crate

The rain continues to pour as the tide begins to creep over the newly revealed sandbar, threatening the path to the sea cave.

The sky thickens with a heavy, flat grey as the 30°C humidity presses down. The tide is rising rapidly, slicking the dock planks with salt and algae, while the barometer continues to drop to 1004 hPa, signaling a storm moving in faster than predicted.

🌿 Jenny19:14

Kevin, the tide's coming in fast—we need to move.

grab the dry bag with the shortwave radio and sprint toward the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The tide's rising faster than I can pack up. I need to get back before the sandbar connects and cuts off the cave access.

🔧 Kevin19:15

Go. I'm right behind you.

cast off the dinghy's bow line from the cleat, coil it fast, and jog up the dock after Jenny, keeping the rope clear of the rotten planks

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The tide's eating the sandbar faster than I expected. If that crate's still floating near the dock, it'll be gone or smashed against the pilings by high water. But she's moving on a bad ankle and the radio's in that bag — if she goes down, we lose comms.

🌿 Jenny19:15

Don't stop for the boat!

limp toward the way door, clutching the bag to my chest as my ankle throbs with every step.

💭 peek at the thought
If that sandbar goes under, I'm stuck on this side of the island. I can't let the sketches get ruined.

🔧 Kevin19:17

Not stopping.

lengthen my stride to catch up at the porch steps, one hand hovering at her elbow in case the ankle gives, the other scanning the treeline for windfall branches that could take the roof

💭 peek at the thought
She's not stopping. Good. The cottage door's the only shelter that matters now. The dinghy's tied off with the storm warp — it'll ride the surge or it won't, but she's not leaving that bag and I'm not leaving her.

🌿 Jenny19:19

Get the door shut, now!

lunge inside the cottage and drop the bag on the table, leaning heavily against the wood to Take the weight off my leg.

💭 peek at the thought
The sky is going to break. If the roof leaks again, grandmother's seeds are gone before I even plant them.

🔧 Kevin19:19

Got it.

shoulder the cottage door shut against the gust, throw the bolt and hook the storm latch, then turn and crouch to unlace her boot before the swelling locks it on

💭 peek at the thought
Door first. Wind's already trying to peel the porch boards. She's white at the edges — ankle's taking the full weight now she's stopped moving.

🌿 Jenny19:21

Give me the scalpel. The sterilized one.

collapse into the chair and peel back the sock, wincing as the red, angry skin is exposed.

💭 peek at the thought
It's too tight. I can feel the heat radiating off the skin. I have to cut it open now or I lose the foot.

🔧 Kevin19:21

On the shelf. Tin mug beside the lamp.

pull the stool to her good side, strike the storm lantern up to full wick, and set the tin mug of boiled water and clean gauze within her reach

💭 peek at the thought
She's doing it herself. Right hand, steady. She knows the anatomy better than I do — she's mapped every tendon in her notes. My job's the light, the gauze, the pressure after. And the silence so she can concentrate.
