Low tide scavenge

Kevin and Jenny meet at the dock as the tide reaches its lowest point, revealing salt-crusted debris among the rocks.

The rain intensifies from the west, turning the air into a grey curtain of cold water. Kevin stands at the end of the dock, holding the rope taut as he watches the swell pull at the pilings. Jenny is perched on the fourth plank, her knuckles white as she grips the line, shifting her weight onto her good leg to minimize the sharp throb in her injured ankle.

Watch your step on the kelp. It's slick as ice.

walk down the jetty to the beach, scanning the tideline for salvageable timber and the crate that's been floating off the dock

💭 peek at the thought
Low tide exposes the wreckage. Good. I can see what the storm dragged in before the water covers it again. Jenny's ankle will hate the rocks but she won't say so.

🌿 Jenny19:07

I'm trying.

Lean heavily against the dock piling, shifting weight to my good foot to dull the throbbing in my ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer is dropping too fast, and my leg feels like it's being held in a vice.

🔧 Kevin19:07

Take the rope. I'll go first, test the footing.

uncoil a length of the new half-inch rope from the crate, tie a bowline around the seaward piling, and hold the standing end out to her

💭 peek at the thought
She's favoring it hard. The swelling's not gone down like I hoped. Should've made her stay at the cottage but she'd have fought me on it.

🌿 Jenny19:09

Be careful with those rotten planks.

Reach out with a trembling hand to take the rope, eyes fixed on the slick wood of the jetty.

💭 peek at the thought
If he falls, I'm not strong enough to pull him back up.

🔧 Kevin19:09

Step where I step. Third plank from the end — skip it entirely.

plant my boot on the second plank, testing weight before committing, then move to the fourth, keeping the rope taut for her

💭 peek at the thought
She's shaking. Cold or pain, probably both. The planks held last storm but the rot's deeper than I thought. Two more need replacing before the next spring tide.

🌿 Jenny19:11

I see it.

Grip the rope tight until my knuckles turn white, slowly shifting my weight onto the second plank while avoiding the gap.

💭 peek at the thought
The wood looks so soft it might just crumble like paper under my weight.

🔧 Kevin19:11

Fourth plank's sound. Fifth's soft in the middle. Step on the edge.

reach the end of the jetty, unclip the dinghy's bow line from the corroded ring, and walk back toward her on the sound planks, keeping the rope slack but ready

💭 peek at the thought
Good. She's got the rhythm. White knuckles mean she's fighting the pain but she's moving. The gap's wider than yesterday — tide's been working the rot.

🌿 Jenny19:13

I'm moving.

Step onto the edge of the fourth plank, biting my lip as the ankle reacts to the pressure.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get to that crate, the seeds will just go to rot.
