The Approaching Storm

The heavy air finally breaks as the first cool gust picks up from the sea. You and Jenny are together at the table as the afternoon rain begins to fall.

The rain has turned into a driving downpour, drumming loudly against the heavy-duty tarp over the cottage roof. Inside, the air is humid and the smell of wet earth and wood smoke lingers. The tide is rising rapidly, lapping at the lower dock planks as the storm moves in faster than the forecast predicted.

🌿 Jenny23:51

The rain is coming in hard. Is the radio holding up for the report?

Jenny leans back, wincing, and traces the edge of a sea beet sketch in her notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
The fever is finally breaking, but my ankle feels like it's on fire. I need to check the drainage before it floods again.

Holding. New insulator's sealed. Aerial's sound.

pour two mugs of the limpet broth, set one in front of her

💭 peek at the thought
Radio's fine — new insulator held through the storm. She's asking about the report because she wants to know if the boat's still coming in four days, not because she thinks the set might fail.

🌿 Jenny23:53

Good. The salt water is fighting the infection, I think. Mostly.

I wrap my hands around the warm mug, watching the steam fog up my glasses.

💭 peek at the thought
She's too quiet. That silence usually means she's in more pain than she is admitting.

Red line hasn't moved since Tuesday. Skin's cooler. You're past the worst.

sit opposite her with my own mug, blow steam off the top

💭 peek at the thought
She's downplaying it. The red line stopped advancing two days ago. Fever broke at 0400. She's healing. But she won't say it outright — she waits for me to confirm.

🌿 Jenny23:55

It's still throbbing. The drainage is probably going to be a mess again.

I take a slow sip of the broth, the salt hitting my tongue as I look at the rain-streaked window.

💭 peek at the thought
If I'm past the worst, why does it still feel like the bone is being squeezed?

🔧 Kevin23:55

Throbbing's good. Means the nerves are knitting. Drainage is what we want — wound's cleaning itself.

reach over and brush a damp strand of hair from her forehead, thumb grazing her temple briefly

💭 peek at the thought
Throbbing means healing — nerve endings waking up. Drainage means the wound's open and cleaning itself. She knows this. She's a scientist. She's just tired of being the patient.

🌿 Jenny23:57

I hope so. If that trench is blocked again, the whole garden is going to a swamp.

I shift my weight slightly, a sharp hiss escaping through my teeth as the ankle brushes the chair leg.

💭 peek at the thought
His hand is warm. My skin feels like it's melting off though.

🔧 Kevin23:57

Trench ran clear at low tide yesterday. Water's moving. Garden's not drowning.

slide my mug aside, reach for the notebook on the shelf — the one with the sea beet sketches — and set it in front of her

💭 peek at the thought
She's deflecting to the garden. The hiss tells me more than the words — ankle's still tender, weight-bearing hurts. She won't stay off it. I checked the trench yesterday; water was running clean. She doesn't know that.

🌿 Jenny23:59

Then maybe I won't lose the south slope yet.

I look down at the sketches, the salt glands looking so perfect and orderly compared to this mess of a leg.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the water, but I can't even hold a pencil right now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin23:59

You won't. Slope's held three storms now. Deadman anchors are biting. Tarps are battened.

tap the page with one finger — the salt gland illustration — and hold it there

💭 peek at the thought
She's looking at her own work like it belongs to someone else. The sketches are precise — gland density gradients across elevation zones, salt excretion rates logged in her hand. She did that while running fever, ankle weeping, storm hammering the shutters. She calls it a mess. I call it the best data this island's ever seen.
