The Calm Before the Boat

Kevin returns from the mainland as the pressure begins to drop. The supply boat is still four days away, and the heavy air suggests the rain is coming.

Kevin insists Jenny sit down to examine her infected ankle as the air pressure continues to drop. He prepares a warm broth and carefully debrides the wound, warning her that she must be mobile when the supply boat arrives in four days.

🌿 Jenny23:41

The barometer is dropping. The drainage didn't hold.

Jenny pulls the blanket tighter over her leg and turns toward the window, watching the grey sky over the south slope.

💭 peek at the thought
He's back, but he smells like salt and exhaustion, and my ankle feels like it is on fire.

Posted it. Crossroads box. Skipper'll lift it when he passes." (pause, setting wet oilskin on the porch rail) "Talk to me about the drainage. What didn't hold?

step inside, unbuckle wet boots, set them on the stone floor to drain

💭 peek at the thought
Eight kilometres in steady rain and the knee held. Letter's gone — posted at the crossroads box. Now the barometer's telling me what I already felt in the joints: something heavy rolling in. Jenny's watching the south slope where the drainage failed. She's cold, leg elevated, blanket pulled tight. Four days to the supply boat if it keeps schedule.

🌿 Jenny23:43

The trench is blocked with silt and roots. Water is still pooling at the wall base. I couldn't get out there today.

Jenny winces as she shifts, her hand instinctively gripping the poultice on her ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
He wants a report on a trench when I can barely stand the weight of my own leg.

"Roots take time. Silt moves fast." (crossing to the stove, checking the kettle) "Kettle's warm. You need broth in you before we look at anything. How's the leg feeling — honest?

lift kettle, pour hot water into two tin mugs, set one beside her on the table

💭 peek at the thought
Trench silted and root-choked. Water pooling at the wall base again. She couldn't reach it today — ankle, fever, rain. The south slope's been fighting us since day one. Four days of coming storm will test every repair we've made.

🌿 Jenny23:45

It's hot. Pulsing. Every heartbeat feels like a hammer against the bone.

Jenny wraps both hands around the mug, seeking the warmth, and stares at the steam rising.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat from the mug is the only thing that isn't feeling like fire in my skin.

🔧 Kevin23:47

"Finish the mug. Then I'll look at it — proper, under the lamp." (voice low, not asking) "When did the heat start?

pull the LED lamp closer on the table, set out clean gauze and the antibiotic cream, peel back the blanket edge to expose her ankle

💭 peek at the thought
Hot, pulsing, hammer against bone — that's not improving. Could be the infection tracking deeper, could be the bone itself. Metronidazole course finished. Doxycycline done. Four days to the supply boat and the barometer dropping. She's cold despite the mug. Fever might be coming back.

🌿 Jenny23:48

Since this morning. The fever broke last night, but the pain's been steady since dawn. I'm not staying here waiting for the storm to pass. I've got work to do.

Jenny lifts the mug to her lips, takes a slow sip, then hesitates as Kevin carefully peels back more of the blanket. </think> Jenny sets the mug down hard, the metal clinking against the table, and stands up unsteadily, leaning against the

💭 peek at the thought
He's anchoring me to this moment, to this body, when all I can think about is the soil and whether I'll make it to the ridge. The air tastes like salt and iodine. I need to get back to the sea beet roots before they're gone.

🔧 Kevin23:49

"Sit down. That's an order, not a request." (firm, quiet, leaving no room) "The trench isn't going anywhere. The wall isn't falling tonight. You go out on that leg in this pressure and you'll be carried back — or worse. Four days to the boat. I need you vertical when it arrives.

keep one hand on her shoulder, guiding her back toward the chair, the other hand steadying the mug she abandoned

💭 peek at the thought
She's standing on a leg with a deep infection, fever possibly returning, barometer falling, storm coming. Stubborn as the island. The ankle needs rest, elevation, the antibiotics finished. She needs to be horizontal, not hobbling toward a silted trench in driving rain.
