Preparation for the front

Kevin returns to the cottage as the tide reaches its peak. The barometer remains steady, but the air grows heavier.

Kevin tested the Yanmar engine in the dinghy to ensure the vibration fix held under load. Jenny worked on the north ridge to complete the Carex transect and secure the garden against the approaching front.

🔧 Kevin01:33

Engine held. No vibration at half throttle. Only shows above three-quarters, and even then it's minor — prop shaft true, bracket's just a hair off. She'll run.

walk up to the cottage porch and set down the notebook, then check the garden tarp corners and re-stake the lifted edge on the northwest side

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer holding at 985. Good. The front's stalling offshore. Means we've got hours before it decides to break or push through. Means the dock repairs get tested by a proper high tide with swell behind it. Means I need to check the tell-tales before the water drops.

🌿 Jenny01:35

Good. Just check the tank.

Reach for the saline solution, wincing as the water hits the raw skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a working engine is a victory while I'm literally rotting from the ankle up.

🔧 Kevin01:35

Tank's full. Three-ninety-four. Overflow ran clean at high tide.

walk to the back wall and tap the rain tank gauge, then turn to the radio shelf and flip the shortwave on to scan 16 and the trust frequency

💭 peek at the thought
She's doing it herself. Good. Means the fever's properly gone and the infection's draining clean. Saline stings like hell on raw tissue but it's the right call — keeps the wound open, flushes the debris. I'll check the tank and the radio while she works.

🌿 Jenny01:37

Listen for the static.

Pick up the pencil and try to finish the salt glands on the sea-beet despite the shaking hands.

💭 peek at the thought
Two days for the boat. If the fever spikes before then, I won't be able to walk.

🔧 Kevin01:37

Copy.

lean into the radio, adjust the squelch, and let the speaker run open on 16 while the scan cycles through the trust frequency and the weather band

💭 peek at the thought
Static on the shortwave means atmosphere's charging. Front's building charge even if the barometer's holding. She wants to know if it's precipitation static or something else. I'll listen.

🌿 Jenny01:39

Don't forget the salt.

Press the pencil lead into the paper, forcing the morphology of the sea-beet leaf.

💭 peek at the thought
The static is the only thing that doesn't hurt today.

🔧 Kevin01:39

Basin's on the stove. Warm.

cross to the wood stove, lift the lid, and check the galvanized bucket of salt water warming beside the kettle, then pull it off and set it on the table near her cot

💭 peek at the thought
She means the ankle soak. Epsom salts in the basin. I put it on the stove to warm before I left. Should be ready by now. Radio's just giving us the usual hiss — nothing on 16, nothing on the trust frequency. Atmospherics building but no voices. I'll kill the scan and check the basin.

🌿 Jenny01:41

Thanks.

Slowly unwind the ankle brace, holding a sharp breath as the dry cloth clings to the swollen skin.

💭 peek at the thought
I need to get thispus out before the infection reaches the bone.
