← Day 604

Apart — Kevin at the garden, Jenny at the woods

Afternoon Work

Kevin is in the garden, clearing the path; Jenny is in the woods, searching for edible plants.

Kevin inspected the spruce spar epoxy repair on the dinghy mast under daylight, finding the epoxy still tacky but structurally sound, then retrieved epoxy and a heat gun from the workshop to force-cure the joint. Jenny returned from the woods, checked the garden stakes, and went to the cottage radio.

🔧 Kevin — alone at the garden

You stand beside the cleared path, the spruce log now on the firewood pile. You check the come‑along for any needed repairs before heading to the dock later.

🔧 Kevin03:56

Kevin — wipe down the come-along cable and ratchet, check for salt corrosion, then walk toward the dock with tools to inspect the spruce spar repair

💭 peek at the thought
Path's clear. Come-along held. Need to check the dinghy mast spar epoxy before the dock — still tacky, might need more time or a different mix.

🔧 Kevin04:02

Kevin — climb into the dinghy, examine the spruce spar epoxy repair at the mast step under daylight, probe it with a fingernail to test cure state

💭 peek at the thought
At the dock now. Dinghy's floating steady. Mast step looks solid with the doubler plate and through-bolts. Need to check the spruce spar itself — that epoxy repair at the crack near the step.

🔧 Kevin04:06

Kevin — step out of the dinghy, walk to the cottage workshop, get the epoxy tub and a heat gun if there's one, then return to re-work the spar repair with heat to force cure

💭 peek at the thought
Epoxy's still tacky. Two days in this humidity and it hasn't fully cured. The split at the mast step is breathing — I can see the hairline opening and closing when I press the spar. That temporary lashing held through the squall but it's not a fix. If this spar fails under the wind generator load, we lose power. Need to either re-do the epoxy with heat or sister it properly.

🌿 Jenny — alone at the woods

You walk through the underbrush, picking young ferns and a few blackberries. The damp ground makes footing tricky, but you manage to gather enough to refill your small pouch.

🌿 Jenny03:55

Jenny — pack the notebook into the bag, wipe the graphite off the pencil, and start walking back toward the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing again, the heat is getting unbearable. I need to get back to the cottage before the sky truly opens.

🌿 Jenny04:01

Jenny — stop at the edge of the garden to check the stakes, then head for the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
The clouds are thickening fast. I can smell the rain before it hits. I need to check the shade cloth one last time.

🌿 Jenny04:05

Jenny — duck under the heavy plastic tarp covering the door, close the window latch, and head for the radio.

💭 peek at the thought
The first drops are warm on my face, but I know that's just the air before the real storm. I can feel the electricity in the atmosphere.
