Evening preparations before the boat

The sun begins to dip behind the overcast clouds, and the temperature drops by a few degrees as the tide begins its slow return.

Kevin finished torquing the through-bolts on the north piling sister knee as the flood tide rose, then returned to the cottage where Jenny had inspected her ankle and found the infection spreading despite the sea beet poultice.

🔧 Kevin19:17

Kevin — walk to the dock and inspect the north piling sister knee bolts at low water

💭 peek at the thought
Tide's turning. Water's got another six hours before it peaks. North piling won't hold another spring surge without deeper bolts and longer greenheart. Need to check the sister knee bolts while I can still reach them.

🌿 Jenny19:23

The water is coming back fast today.

Unwrap the bandage from the ankle to inspect the swelling, then sketch the pattern of the inflammation in the notebook.

💭 peek at the thought
My ankle is throbbing in time with the tide; I need to check if the poultice is actually drawing anything out.

🔧 Kevin19:30

Flood tide's early. Wind must be piling water against the shore.

crouch at the north piling, wrench in hand, check each through-bolt on the greenheart sister knee for movement or weeping rust

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — flood tide's pushing harder than yesterday. Piling bolts need checking now, not later. Her ankle's the better gauge of weather than the barometer some days.

🌿 Jenny19:31

Check the lower bracket; the salt is eating the wood this year.

Lean heavily against the way post, shifting weight off my swollen ankle while I watch him work.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts are shearing, the whole dock goes, and I'm stranded without the dinghy.

🔧 Kevin19:32

Aye. Seen it tracking up the shim line.

probe the lower bracket with the nail puller, testing for soft wood beneath the greenheart sister plank, then torque the lowest through-bolt a quarter turn

💭 peek at the thought
Lower bracket's the weak point — salt wicks up the end grain. She's seen it same as me. Good eye.

🌿 Jenny19:35

It's deeper than the surface.

Reach into my pocket and touch the tin of grandmother's seeds, feeling the cold metal against my palm.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the wood, but the rot is inside the grain, just like this infection.

🔧 Kevin19:35

Deeper every tide.

finish torquing the lowest bolt, then move to the next one up, driving the wrench home until the stainless bites

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the bracket. She's talking about the tin in her pocket — grandmother's seeds — and maybe the letter in the dry bag on the dinghy. The rot in the piling, the rot in the ankle, the rot between me and Tom. All deeper than surface.

🌿 Jenny19:37

I need to go back inside. The light is failing.

Limp back toward the cottage, wincing as the ankle brushes against the rough stone step.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get to the garden, the seeds will just rot in the tin.

🔧 Kevin19:37

Back in a minute. Stove'll be hot.

lean over the seaward edge of the dock, wrench extended, checking the last through-bolt on the north piling sister knee before the flood tide hides it

💭 peek at the thought
Light's going. Tide's still rising. One more bolt to check on the seaward side before the water covers the mortise. She'll want the stove lit and water hot when I come in.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny19:39

Don't be long.

Sit on the kitchen chair, unwrapping the sea beet poultice to see if the red has spread.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a hot stove fixes everything, but I'm still cold inside.
