Midday Meal

The sun reaches its peak as Kevin returns to the cottage, exhausted and hungry. The air is still and heavy with humidity.

Kevin and Jenny shared a quiet midday meal of boiled limpets at the cottage table. Kevin ate slowly while watching Jenny sketch sea beet morphology in her notebook. They spoke briefly about rest and the supply boat due in eight days.

She's not wrong. The spruce took more out of me than I let on. But "rest" and "before the boat comes" don't sit easy together — there's always something that needs doing before a supply run. Her sketching means she's feeling steady enough to sit still. That's better than the alternative.
