Clearing the Path

Kevin works at the fallen spruce trunk, sawing through branches to clear the path to the garden. Jenny sits on the low stone wall, her ankle elevated on a crate while she watches the work under the light onshore breeze.

The morning light is clean over the garden as a light onshore breeze carries the scent of the sea. Jenny sits on the porch, her ankle throbbing despite the cold pack, watching the tide rise toward the dock, while Kevin inspects the Yanmar pump one last time, the persistent whine a mocking reminder of the scored bore in the housing.

Path'll be clear by midday. Wood's decent — dry enough for the stove once it's split.

Saw through a thick lower branch, letting it drop to the grass, then move to the next one blocking the garden gate.

💭 peek at the thought
Good of her to be out here. The light's right for seeing the grain, and she's not in the cottage stewing.

Just make sure you don't crush the sea beet patch near the wall.

Adjusts the crate under her ankle, wincing as the throbbing intensifies.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a clear path will stop the rot, but the rot is already under my skin.

Noted. I'll stack the limbs on the path side.

Cut the next branch, lowering it carefully away from the garden wall where the sea beet grows, and stack it on the growing pile along the path.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the pain. Won't say it, but the wince tells me the antibiotic's not caught up yet.

🌿 Jenny19:55

The salt air is picking up; it'll make the wound sting.

Reaches for her notebook and begins to sketch the pattern of redness spreading up her calf.

💭 peek at the thought
If the infection gets to the bone, I won't be able to walk to the north ridge.

🔧 Kevin19:55

Poultice needs changing at noon. I'll mix fresh.

Finish the last branch blocking the gate, set the saw down, and pull the cut limbs into a neat stack along the path edge, clear of the sea beet.

💭 peek at the thought
She's documenting it. Good. Means she's watching it herself, not just waiting for me to notice. The salt sting's real — pulls moisture, tightens the skin — but she's had worse and worked through it.

🌿 Jenny19:57

Use more of the sea beet this time; the heat is still too deep.

Presses a hand against the edge of the inflammation, feeling the skin tighten from the swelling.

💭 peek at the thought
The redness is moving faster than the sketches showed yesterday.

🔧 Kevin19:57

More sea beet. Less mint. Thicker layer.

Walk to the garden wall, crouch at the sea beet patch, and cut a generous handful of the broadest leaves, stripping the tough stems.

💭 peek at the thought
Heat deep means the infection's still tracking despite the antibiotics. Sea beet draws better than anything we've got, but it's slow. She knows that. She's telling me anyway.
