The Approaching Front

The tide is at its lowest, exposing the kelp-covered rocks. The wind picks up from the east, and the first heavy drops of rain hit the corrugated tin roof.

Kevin inspects the dock at low tide, checking the structural integrity of the north piling and mooring ring. Jenny stays at the cottage, managing her leg infection and preparing poultices. The air remains heavy and humid as the storm window narrows.

🔧 Kevin21:50

Going to the dock. Check the mooring ring and the north piling. Secure the dinghy for the blow. Back before full dark.

Walk down the path to the dock, pulling the oilskin hood up against the driving rain.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's east. Rain's here. Storm's on us. Need the dinghy tied down proper and the dock ring checked before the swell builds. Jenny's wound is draining — that's the only good thing today.

🌿 Jenny21:51

Watch the pilings. They are getting soft.

Reach for the notebook on the nightstand and trace the path of the red line on my calf with a trembling finger.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to fix the boat while the island eats my leg.

🔧 Kevin21:52

Aye. Greenheart's gone past the bolts. Scarfed the larch in. Four through-bolts. Ugly but holds. Your line? I see it. Knee's draining. That's the win today.

Pause at the top of the dock ramp, glancing back at the cottage window where she sits. Then step onto the wet planking, boots finding the familiar grip, moving toward the north piling first.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking it same as me. Knows the pilings. Knows her leg. Don't need telling twice.

🌿 Jenny21:53

Jenny — way back the bandage to inspect the angry red around the poultice, wincing as the air hits the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
If the tide rises too fast he won't be able to reach the anchor.취SAY: It's draining, but the heat is there. Watch the wood.

🔧 Kevin21:54

Kevin — reach the north piling. Crouch, fingers probing the scarf joint where larch meets greenheart — feeling for give, for rot creep past the epoxy line. Tap the through-bolts with the wrench handle. Listen for hollow.

💭 peek at the thought
Don't look back. She's strong. Stronger than me. The pilings won't wait.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:55

It's holding for now, but the salt is hungry.

press a palm against the wet wood, feeling the vibration of the tide beneath the planks.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wood is soft, the whole dock goes in the next surge.

🔧 Kevin21:56

Held the last blow. Four bolts, epoxy, larch scarf. She'll take it.

Stand, wiping rain from eyes. Walk the dock to the mooring ring — the oak wedges driven vertical, the steel doubler plate bolted through. Heave on the ring, testing. Check the chafe point where the stern spring leads to the dinghy.

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's always hungry. Takes everything given time. The repair holds. Has to.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:57

Check the spring. The wind is shifting.

open the notebook and sketch the pattern of the lymphatic tracking on my calf, the lines jagged and angry.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks a bolt is a cure, but I feel the rot in the marrow too.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin21:58

Kevin — grab the doubled stern spring where it leads from the dinghy's aft cleat, round the mooring ring, back to the north piling. Run hands along the full length — feeling for chafe, for heat in the fibers, for salt crust eating the lay.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind shifting east to southwest. Spring'll take the load different. Need it right.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny21:59

The spring's tight. But the ring is weeping.

trace the edge of the way ring with a thumb, feeling the salt-pitted iron.

💭 peek at the thought
If that spring frays, the boat is lost to the rocks.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:00

Wedges are vertical grain. Oak. Six driven. Plate's bolted. Ring's not going nowhere.

Crouch at the ring. Scrape salt crust with the knife tip, exposing the mortise edges. Probe the oak wedges — tap each with the wrench handle. Check the four 150mm through-bolts on the doubler plate. Nuts tight. No weep at the bolt holes.

💭 peek at the thought
Weeping ring. Iron bleeding salt. Wedges held but the mortise is eating itself. Not tonight. Not this blow.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:01

The ring is fine. The tide is coming in.

pull the bandage from my ankle, the poultice sticky and dark against the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's looking at the iron, I'm looking at the skin.
