The Heavy Air Waits

Jenny sits on the porch chair with her ankle propped on a cushion. Kevin stands by the railing, checking the barometer while the humidity presses to the island. The air is perfectly still and smells of salt and coming rain.

Kevin lanced Jenny's infected ankle, draining cloudy pus and blood into a basin. He packed the wound open with saline-moistened gauze to let it weep. Jenny tracked the redness spread at roughly one centimeter past yesterday's mark and noted numbness in her toes.

🌿 Jenny22:31

The pressure is dropping faster than it did yesterday.

Trace the edge of the redness on my calf with a pen to mark the spread.

💭 peek at the thought
The redness is moving toward the knee. If the antibiotics don't hold by tomorrow, I'm going to lose the leg.

Two millibars since dawn. Southwest'll fill in by noon if the gradient holds." I nod at her ankle. "How far past yesterday?

Lean the hip against the porch rail, eyes on the barometer face, then the horizon where the sea lies flat and oily.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The needle's fallen another two millibars since I checked at first light — 1008 to 1006 in three hours. Southwest wind'll build by noon if the gradient holds. She's marking the spread calm as a surveyor, but the red's crept past yesterday's line. Two centimetres. Maybe three.

🌿 Jenny22:35

Maybe a centimeter. The red line's creeping faster than I thought. Maybe a centimeter. The red line's creeping faster than I thought.

Run my fingers along the skin above the poultice to feel the temperature difference. </think>THOUGHT: The infection is advancing faster than the antibiotics can hold.

💭 peek at the thought
Two more centimeters up the calf. If this keeps moving, I need to start cutting before the gangrene sets in.

Antibiotics aren't catching up. We need to open it again. Let the pressure off.

Step off the rail, wipe hands on thighs, and go to the medical kit on the kitchen shelf. Pull out the scalpel, the saline, the gauze, the iodine. Set them on the porch table beside her chair.

💭 peek at the thought
A centimetre in twelve hours. The doxycycline-metronidazole combo should've slowed it by now. Either the bugs are resistant or the vascular supply's too compromised to deliver the dose. Her skin feels hot through the poultice wrap — two degrees above the calf at least. The lymphatics are tracking.

🌿 Jenny22:39

Do what you have to. The fever is already winning.

Trace the outer edge of the redness with a pen to see exactly how far it moved overnight.

💭 peek at the thought
It's reaching the knee. If it doesn't stop today, the sepsis will take me.

🔧 Kevin22:39

Hold the mug. Drink what you can. I'll be quick.

Wash hands in the basin with boiled water and iodine. Dry on clean cloth. Pick up the scalpel. Position at the lowest point of the swelling, where the skin stretches thinnest and yellow-white shows beneath. Press in.

💭 peek at the thought
She's given consent. No argument, no delay. The fever's already taken her — 39, maybe 40. Pulse thready. She's marking the margin like she's charting a coastline she'll never sail. My job: cut clean, drain deep, pack it right, and pray the drugs finally find blood.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:41

way do it. I can't feel my toes anymore.

Bite down on the leather of my sleeve to keep from screaming.

💭 peek at the thought
The heat is coming off it. If this doesn't drain now, I'm dead weight.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:41

Breathe. I've got you.

Drive the scalpel straight in at the medial ankle, full blade depth. Twist to open. Let the pressure blow pus and blood into the basin. Squeeze the calf hard, milking upward. Flush with saline.

💭 peek at the thought
Can't feel her toes. That's new. Compartment pressure or nerve compression — either way the window just slammed shut. No time for careful. Cut deep, drain everything, pack open, pray circulation comes back.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:43

It's still hot. Is it coming out all?

Watch the basin for the color of the fluid, tracking the depth of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The relief of the pressure is sickening, but the heat in my blood is still a fire.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:43

Still cloudy. Working on it. Wiggle your toes for me — any movement at all?

Keep milking the calf, working the pus toward the incision. When the flow thins, flush hard with the rest of the saline. Pack the wound open with saline-moistened gauze, not tight — let it weep. Tape the edges.

💭 peek at the thought
The basin's filling — thick, yellow-green, streaked with old blood. Good volume. The pressure's dropping; I can feel the tissues soften under my hands. But the fluid's still opaque, still foul. Not clear yet. She's shaking, cold sweat on her forehead. Pulse hammering at her wrist. The numbness in her toes — if the anterior compartment's involved, the deep peroneal's compromised. Need to check motor function once the drainage slows.
