The Ascent to the Ridge
Kevin and Jenny walk together to the ridge to visit the stone circle as the sun begins to dip.
The air at the shrine is heavy and humid, smelling of coming rain and damp earth. The tide is fully out, exposing the slick, dark rocks of the shore and the tide pools. Jenny sits on the stone bench, her breathing shallow as the fever continues to climb; the redness on her ankle has visibly migrated toward the calf despite the sea beet poultice.
Take your time. The stones aren't going anywhere.
Walk the ridge path beside Jenny, matching her pace, cane tapping ahead of her on the worn track. The shrine comes into view — the ring of weathered stones on the saddle between hilltop and cliffs, names carved soft by salt and wind.

I know. Just... the air.
Jenny leans heavily on her cane, eyes tracing the lichen-covered carvings on the nearest stone.

Air's different up here. Salt and pine. Less rot.
Stop at the edge of the circle. Hands in pockets. Watch her move from stone to stone, cane slow on the turf. The wind lifts the hair at her temple.

It's quiet. At least.
Jenny reaches out a trembling hand to touch the smooth, cold surface of a weathered stone.

The McDonalds. Lightkeeper's family. Cholera took the children in '52. The wife followed in '53. He stayed another twelve years. Died at the lantern.
Stand a pace back. Let her have the moment. The wind shifts, carries the smell of gorse and wet stone. My thumb finds the envelope's edge in my pocket — the letter's corner, softened by sweat and time.

He stayed a long time.
Jenny traces the shallow groove of a name with her fingertip, her breath hitching as the movement spikes in her ankle.

Had nowhere else to go. No one waiting on the mainland.
Step closer. Not touching. Close enough that if she listed I'd catch her. The envelope corner presses against my thigh through the pocket fabric. The wind gusts, rattles the gorse. Somewhere below, the tide sucks at the cliff base.

It's a lot of silence.
Jenny pulls her hand away from the stone, her fingers white where she grips the wood of her cane. She looks out at the grey horizon where the sea meets the sky.
