Evening at the shrine

Rain lashes the ridge as they climb the path together, Kevin carrying the storm lantern and Jenny leaning on the driftwood cane. The standing stones are slick with water, the carved initials 'LB' and the softwood scrap marked 'I'm still here' both visible in the lantern light. Wind tears at the tarp over the cottage roof far below.

Kevin and Jenny stand by the old shrine, the air thick with the wet season heat. Jenny points to a hairline crack in the stone where the moss has pulled away, revealing the carved letters 'LB'. Kevin kneels, pressing the heel of his boot against the base to test the stability, but the soil around the stone is loose and the entire structure is shifting under the weight.

🌿 Jenny03:13

Look at the stones, Kevin. They're moving.

Reach out to touch the weathered stone with the carved 'LB'.

💭 peek at the thought
The storm is coming faster than the boat. If the helicopter can't make it through this, those seeds have to be buried on the ridge.

🔧 Kevin03:13

They're not moving, Jen. Light off the lantern.

set the storm lantern on a flat stone, freeing both hands; step close behind her, one hand on her elbow above the brace

💭 peek at the thought
Stones don't move. She's seeing things — fever, exhaustion, or the light playing tricks. But she's steady on the cane. Her hand's not shaking.

🌿 Jenny03:15

I know what I'm seeing.

Lean my weight onto the cane and trace the edge of the carved name with a trembling thumb.

💭 peek at the thought
He's trying to be gentle, but I can feel the weight of it in his hand.

🔧 Kevin03:15

Show me. Where?

crouch beside the stone she's touching, lantern light catching the carved initials; run calloused fingertips along the base where stone meets earth, feeling for fresh grit, movement, a gap

💭 peek at the thought
She's not delirious. She's seeing something real — or she believes she is. Either way, arguing won't help. The wind's loud enough to mask a lot. Could be the ground shifting. This ridge sits on shale.

🌿 Jenny03:17

Right here. Under the 'L'.

Point to the hairline crack where the moss has pulled away from the stone.

💭 peek at the thought
The earth is shifting. I can feel the vibration of the wind in the very rock.

🔧 Kevin03:17

Fresh break. Moss came off clean.

press the heel of my boot against the stone's base, testing for rock or give; scrape the crack wider with a fingernail, checking depth, whether it runs under the whole ring

💭 peek at the thought
Hairline crack at the 'L'. Moss peeled back fresh. That's not weather — something levered this. Recent. The ground's shifting under the shrine, or something pushed up from below. Shale bedrock doesn't move fast unless water's undercutting it. Spring's uphill. Could be a new fissure.

🌿 Jenny03:19

It's not just the stone. The whole slope is sliding.

Look down at the embankment where the soil is thinning under the rain.

💭 peek at the thought
If the ridge is failing, the garden won't last. I need to move the seeds higher.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:19

Bench cut's failing. Toe's washing out.

sweep the lantern beam down the slope, tracing the line where grass tears away from subsoil; plant the cane's tip beside the stone as a reference mark, lining it up with a dead spruce stump twenty metres downslope

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The embankment below the stones — soil's washing thin, exposing root mats and shale flakes. Rain's heavy, steady. The whole ridge could be creeping. Shrine's on a bench cut into the hillside; if the toe goes, the bench follows. Cottage's below. Garden. Dock. Not tonight, not at this rate, but the supply boat's due tomorrow and the barometer's still falling. If a front stalls...

🌿 Jenny03:21

We can't wait for the boat.

Pull the seed tin from my pocket, fingers the cold metal.

💭 peek at the thought
If that slope goes, my grandmother's seeds go into the sea. I have to find the stable ground now.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin03:21

The helicopter won't fly in this. Not with the wind backing southeast.

reach into my oilskin pocket, pull out the shortwave handset; thumb the power switch, wait for the green glow, settle on the trust frequency

💭 peek at the thought
She's not talking about the supply boat. She's talking about the medevac. The forms are signed. The helicopter's eight hours out from Cairns if we call. But the storm's building — barometer 1009 and falling, wind backing southeast. If the ridge is moving, the cottage's in the path. The garden. The radio mast. Everything we've built. She's choosing: stay and ride it out on a sliding hillside, or leave what's left of this life behind. The tin in her hand — Tom's letter, the seeds, the forms. She's already decided.
