The Storm Breaks
The rain intensifies into a heavy downpour as night falls, and the wind begins to howl through the radio mast.
Kevin crawled into the damp space beneath the cottage floorboards to inspect the water tank. He located the source of the leak near the northeast corner where water was saturating the soil. Jenny stayed inside to manage her ankle while the clouds began to thicken overhead.
Jenny is quiet for a moment.

Stay put. I'll check the crawlspace and the tank.
Grab the flashlight and head for the kitchen trapdoor to inspect the foundation leak and tank overflow.

Don't stay too long. The pressure is dropping.
Reach for the notebook to sketch the pattern of red streaks on my calf.

Back in ten. Keep the blanket on.
Drop through the trapdoor into the crawlspace, flashlight beam cutting through damp dark to find the tank overflow and foundation seep.

(from below, voice muffled) Overflow's running clear. Foundation's taking water at the northeast corner. Need to trench it.
Shine light along the stone footing, locate the active seep, then climb back up through the trapdoor dripping.

Be careful. The soil is saturated, it might turn to mud.
Mark the water level on the stone wall with a pencil to track how fast it rises.

Trench first. Then the sump. Radio check at 0800 regardless.
Climb out of the trapdoor, grab the spade from the porch, and start digging a drainage trench off the northeast corner toward the grass slope.
