The Calm Before the Boat

Jenny sits on the porch steps with her ankle propped on a cushion. Kevin stands by the barometer, watching the pressure continue its slow drop while the heavy air remains still.

Kevin finished the greenheart sistering on the west shutter, but the wood was soft and the bolts didn't bite properly, leaving the frame loose. Jenny spent the morning on the porch, watching the barometer drop while her ankle throbbed in the humid heat of the coming storm.

🌿 Jenny10:51

The wind is coming early, Kevin. Check the east shutter bolts again.

Jenny opens her notebook and begins a quick, jagged sketch of the迫 formations over the north ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is falling too fast; if the storm hits before the boat, I won't be able to get to the dock.

🔧 Kevin10:53

Already on it. Back in ten.

walk to the east shutter and inspect the bolt heads and mortise for movement or fresh splitting

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the wind. The barometer's at 995 and falling steady, air this still at this pressure means something's building offshore. East shutter took 180 last squall with improvised bolts — greenheart shims and 10mm rod cut from tank steel. Held, but the frame flexed 12mm. If the next one hits harder from the same quarter, those bolts shear or the mortise splits. Need to check them now, not later.

🌿 Jenny10:55

Use the longer screws if the wood is soft from the salt-rot.

Jenny winces as she shifts her weight, the throbbing heat of the infection pulsing with her heart.

💭 peek at the thought
If those bolts pull, the whole frame comes in on us.

🔧 Kevin10:55

Through-bolts staged inside. Washers and nylocs too. If the sill's punky, screws are useless.

open the east shutter and probe the sill and mortise with the awl to test wood soundness, then check the staged hardware on the porch floor

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the rot better than I am some days. The east shutter mortise has salt-rot at the sill — I saw it when I drove the greenheart shims. Longer screws won't hold in punky wood. Need through-bolts with washers and nylocs, backing plate on the interior face. I staged two 10mm x 150mm stainless through-bolts with washers and nylocs at the shutter yesterday. That's the fix if the wood's gone soft.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:57

Make sure the nylocs are tight. I can't have it rattling all night.

Jenny presses the pencil against the paper, her hand trembling as she shades the dark clouds on the sketch.

💭 peek at the thought
He's right about the wood; it's rotting just like everything else.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:57

Nylocs get 35Nm. West shutter next.

drive the two 10mm x 150mm stainless through-bolts through the east shutter mortise and greenheart shims, secure with flat washers and nyloc nuts torqued to 35Nm, then move to the west shutter to inspect the dog bolts and frame movement

💭 peek at the thought
Her hand's shaking. Not from cold — it's 24 degrees. The infection's still systemic even with the fever down. Antibiotics finished yesterday. She's running on reserves and she knows it. The shutter rattle's the least of it, but it's what she can name. I'll torque the nylocs proper and check the west shutter dogs while I'm at it. West frame flexed 12mm last squall. Might need a collar clamp there too.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny10:59

Check the dog bolts specifically. The wood looks darker than last week.

Jenny bites her lip, watching him work while her ankle fluxes with a sharp heat.

💭 peek at the thought
If the west side goes, the rain will come right through the kitchen.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin10:59

Probing them now. If they're soft, I'll sister greenheart and through-bolt.

test each west shutter dog bolt hole with the awl, checking for punky wood and bolt movement, then assess whether greenheart sistering is needed

💭 peek at the thought
Darker wood at the dog bolts means salt-rot's working deeper. The west shutter dogs took the brunt of the last squall — 12mm frame flex at the hinge mortise. If the bolts are pulling into punky timber, the whole leaf goes next hit. Need to probe each dog bolt hole. If they're soft, I'll need to sister greenheart behind the frame and through-bolt the dogs into sound wood. Got greenheart offcuts stacked on the dock. Got the drill and 10mm auger. Got time before the wind turns.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny11:03

Use the greenheart if you have to. We don't have time for another failure.

Jenny traces the edge of a sea beet sketch in her notebook, her breathing shallow.

💭 peek at the thought
If that wood is shot, the whole shutter won't hold the gale.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin11:03

Two dog bolts soft. Third going. Greenheart sisters going in. Back in fifteen.

retrieve the three greenheart offcuts from the dock, drill 10mm clearance holes through the west shutter frame and into sound timber behind, bolt the greenheart sisters to the jamb with 10mm stainless through-bolts, washers and nylocs, then

💭 peek at the thought
Two dog bolt holes are soft — awl sinks half an inch. The third's holding but the timber around it's darkening. Greenheart sistering it is. Three offcuts on the dock, grain-followed, 150mm wide. Need to drill through the frame into sound wood behind, bolt the greenheart knees to the jamb, then re-hang the dogs through the sisters. Three 10mm through-bolts per side, washers and nylocs. The 10mm auger's in the kit. Generator's running for the drill if I need it. Do it now.
