Evening Stillness

The sun begins to dip, casting long shadows across the garden. The tide is at its lowest point.

The rain has turned into a heavy downpour from the west, blurring the view of the old shrine. The tide is currently out low, exposing the slick rocks around the dock. Kevin has pulled the Yanmar gearbox onto the dock, working to shim the driveshaft coupling with brass from the old prop shaft while Jenny remains at the shrine, managing her swollen ankle despite the damp chill.

🔧 Kevin22:10

Kevin — walk down to the dock, pull the Yanmar gearbox and shim the driveshaft coupling with brass from the old prop shaft

💭 peek at the thought
Low tide's the window. Gearbox needs pulling, brass shim cut and fitted before the water comes back. Should've done it yesterday.

🌿 Jenny22:11

Watch the salt spray, Kevin, the wood is slick.

Apply a cold compress to the swelling on my ankle and sketch the morphology of the sea beet leaves I found today.

💭 peek at the thought
He's working on the engine again while the sky is turning that bruised purple; if that coupling fails, we're stuck with nothing but salt and beans.

🔧 Kevin22:12

Aye. Got it.

set tools on the driest plank, crack the gearbox bolts while the coupling's accessible at low water

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the spray. Dock timbers are grease-slick at low tide. One slip and I'm in the water with a gearbox half-off.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:13

Don't forcing them, they're corroded to the bone.

Lean back against the cottage wall and watch the tide recede from the shrine.

💭 peek at the thought
He's fast with the wrench, but if those threads strip, we'll be walking to the mainland when the weather turns.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:14

Not forcing. Persuading.

tap the bolt heads with the hammer, let the vibration work the oil deeper, wait thirty seconds before applying torque

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen me snap bolts before. Knows the sound of good steel giving up. Penetrating oil's been soaking since morning but salt gets in the threads like rust gets in blood.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:15

way don't snap the heads off. We don't have spares.

Trace the jaggedEdge of my ankle with my thumb, feeling the throb of the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
Persuading is a nice word for fighting rust, but the island doesn't take bribes.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:16

Got the tap set. Got the helicoil kit. Got the bronze drift if the threads go.

work the 19mm ring spanner slow, feel for the give, back off a quarter turn each time the resistance spikes

💭 peek at the thought
Four bolts. Two stripped yesterday, one lost in the bilge. The fourth holds the whole gearbox to the bell housing. She counts what we have left like I do.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:17

Watch the angle, Kevin. That metal is thin as old paper.

Sketch the salt glands on the sea beet in my notebook while the tide stays out.

💭 peek at the thought
If he needs the helicoil, the salt has already won this round of the engine.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:21

Flat and square. Same as always.

keep the spanner perpendicular to the flange face, crack the third bolt free with a steady pull, catch the washer before it drops into the bilge water

💭 peek at the thought
Bell housing flange is cast iron, not paper. But the bolt holes have been drilled, tapped, helicoiled, and abused by twenty years of vibration. One wrong angle and the last clean thread pulls out.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:21

way don't lose the washers in the mud. I'm not diving for them today.

Rub the saline into the ankle and try to ignore the heat in the skin.

💭 peek at the thought
He's too confident for a boat that's being eaten from the inside.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:22

Not dropping them.

hold the last washer with two fingers against the flange as the bolt clears, set it in the magnetic tray, ease the gearbox back on the alignment studs

💭 peek at the thought
Three bolts out. Last one's the stubborn one — cross-threaded from the factory or the last rebuild. Washers are stainless, not cheap plate. We have four spares in the tin, but mud eats them.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:23

Check the alignment again. I don't want to do this twice.

Wipe the grease from my hands with a rag, watching the clouds roll in from the west.

💭 peek at the thought
If that doesn't seat right, the vibration will tear the whole housing apart.

google/diffusiongemma-26b-a4b-it

🔧 Kevin22:24

Checking.

run the dial indicator across the coupling face, note the runout at four quadrants, pull the brass stock and micrometer from the tool roll

💭 peek at the thought
Gearbox is free. Coupling exposed. Brass stock's in the workshop — cut from the old prop shaft last month, faced true on the lathe. Need to measure the gap, cut the shim, press it in. One shot at this before the tide turns.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny22:25

Make it quick. The pressure is dropping fast.

Wrap the poultice tight around the ankle, wincing at the heat in the joint.

💭 peek at the thought
If it's off by even a hair, the torque will shear the pins in a week.
