The Rain Breaks

The first heavy drops hit the dock just as Kevin returns with the first load of timber, the wind shifting from the west.

Kevin replaced the corroded washers on the south piling come-along anchor bolts and retensioned the line, finding the piling itself has shifted seaward and the anchor plate is working loose. Jenny opened the heavy rusted seed tin marked 'E' but the lid was seized; forcing it with a screwdriver snapped the tip off her fine tweezers and she could not properly inspect the heirloom seed packets inside for moisture.

Storm's moving fast. Going to stack these beams by the garden wall, then check the south piling tension before high tide. You stay off that ankle.

carry spruce beams to garden wall and stack under tarp, then walk to dock to inspect south piling and come-along

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer warned. West wind means the swell will push straight into the dock face — south piling takes it first. Need to get this timber stacked and the come-along checked before the tide peaks.

🌿 Jenny22:47

Check the bolts first. The salt is eating the threads alive.

Open the seed tin to check the moisture levels of the heirloom varieties.

💭 peek at the thought
He thinks the wood is the only thing rotting, but the infection is in my marrow now.

🔧 Kevin22:47

Bolts first. Then tension.

walk to south end of dock, inspect come-along anchor bolts and piling connection for corrosion, test thread engagement with wrench

💭 peek at the thought
She's right about the bolts — saw the corrosion on the sister knee bolts last week. Salt gets in the threads and you don't know until one shears. I'll check them while I'm at the piling.

🌿 Jenny22:49

Replace the corroded washers. The salt's got to them already. Check the bolts first. The salt's already in the threads.

Search the tool chest for stainless washers and check the piling for hairline cracks. </think>THOUGHT: The salt's eating the threads and the wood's hollowing out from the inside. Open the seed tin to verify the heirloom seeds haven't absorb

💭 peek at the thought
The bolts are just the beginning. The piling will split before the threads give out.

🔧 Kevin22:49

Washers are in the tool chest, bottom drawer. Piling's checking seaward — deeper than last month. Anchor plate's working loose.

retrieve stainless washers from tool chest, replace corroded washers on come-along anchor bolts, retighten, then crank come-along to take up slack on south piling

💭 peek at the thought
Salt's in the threads and the washers are gone to rust. Need stainless. The tool chest has a box of 10mm washers — if the rats haven't gotten to them. Piling's got hairline checks on the seaward face, same as last month but deeper. Come-along's biting but the anchor plate's working loose in the rot.

🌿 Jenny22:51

Replace those washers. The salt's already eaten through them.

Open the seed tin to check the moisture levels of the heirloom varieties.

💭 peek at the thought
He's focused on the metal while my leg is literally turning to mush.
