NIGHT

The overcast clouds thicken as the temperature drops slightly. A breeze picks up from the east, and the barometer continues its steady descent.

The warm rain continues to fall steadily, causing the barometer to drop further as a storm approaches. Kevin spends the evening securing the cottage and checking gear, while Jenny struggles to manage her swelling ankle in the damp heat.

Pressure's dropping. East wind'll push swell into the dock by midnight.

Walk to the barometer on the porch shelf and tap the glass, noting the reading.

💭 peek at the thought
Barometer's still falling. East wind means swell wraps round the point — dock takes it broadside. South piling's already moving. Need to check the come-along again before dark, and the new stern spring on the dinghy.

🌿 Jenny23:29

Check the lines again. I don't want us losing the boat.

Jenny winces as she shifts weight off her throbbing ankle.

💭 peek at the thought
If the swell hits, the dinghy will take a strain the new bolts aren't ready for.

🔧 Kevin23:31

Checked the come-along an hour ago. Piling's still moving. Dinghy lines next.

Walk down the path to the dock, headlamp beam cutting through the dim, and crouch at the mooring ring to inspect the bow line chafe guard and the new stern spring splice.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. The dinghy's our only way off if things go wrong. Stern spring and bow line both need checking — new rope on the spring, but the bow line's old three-strand. Chafe point at the mooring ring.

🌿 Jenny23:31

Don't forget the chafe guard. The salt is eating the nylon.

Jenny picks up her pencil and begins drawing the way the clouds are bunching over the ridge.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going to work himself into exhaustion before the storm even breaks.

🔧 Kevin23:32

Bow line's the problem. Old nylon. Ring's sharp at the wedges. I'll wrap it with canvas off the crate.

Pull the canvas roll from the crate stash on the dock, cut a strip with the knife, and wrap it tight around the bow line where it bites the mooring ring, securing it with two half-hitches of sail twine.

💭 peek at the thought
She's seen the chafe guard I fitted — new section of the half-inch three-strand, served with sail twine. Salt hasn't touched it yet. But the bow line's old nylon, and the ring's sharp where the oak wedges sit. That's the weak link.

🌿 Jenny23:33

Make sure the knots are tight. The wind is coming in hard.

Jenny rubs her ankle, her fingers tracing the throbing heat through the bandage.

💭 peek at the thought
At least the boat won't drift away if the tide rises too fast.
