← Day 638

The storm breaks

The first heavy drops of rain hit the thatch-roof as the wind howls through the radio mast. You gather inside for shelter.

The afternoon pressure holds for now, but the bruised sky deepens as the wind picks up from the west. Kevin secured the north piling with the oak wedges, ensuring the dock would withstand the coming surge, while Jenny retreated to the cottage to bolt the shutters as the first heavy drops began to fall.

Radio's still on Tom's frequency. You want the headset or should I keep listening?

Pull on oilskins and walk to the dock to check dinghy storm lashings and mast bracket alignment.

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here earlier than the barometer said. Need to secure the dinghy mast bracket before the wind shifts west — that slight misalignment will tear the transom if the swell builds.

🌿 Jenny00:05

Keep it on. Just watch the tide, the surge is coming fast.

Sit on the porch and prop my ankle up on a crate, watching the rain hit the garden.

💭 peek at the thought
He's going out on that dock with the sky turning that color; he's an idiot.

🔧 Kevin00:06

North piling's the one to watch. Wind backs west, surge hits there first. I'll check the collar lashings.

Walk down the dock to the north piling, inspect the collar lashings and oak wedges driven into the mortise, test tension on the heavy weather line.

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the water line on the pilings. Smart. The surge hits north piling first when wind backs west — noted that last winter.

🌿 Jenny00:07

Be careful with the wedges, they looked loose after the last swell.

Reach into my pocket and touch the cold metal of grandmother's seed tin.

💭 peek at the thought
If that way goes, the whole dock goes with it, and I'm losing the boat.

🔧 Kevin00:08

Wedges are vertical grain — they'll hold if the mortise hasn't splintered further. I'll drive them deeper if there's room.

Reach the north piling, crouch to examine the mortise and the six oak wedges, tap each with the mallet to test seating, drive any loose ones deeper.

💭 peek at the thought
She noticed the wedges working loose last swell. Good eye. The oak's vertical grain holds better than horizontal but salt and movement chew through fast.

🌿 Jenny00:09

Don't force them. The wood is soft from the salt, just make sure they seat.

Watch him from the porch, my hand hovering over my swollen ankle as the clouds continue to roll in.

💭 peek at the thought
If he forces them too hard the wood will split and then we're truly for.

🔧 Kevin00:10

Tap and seat. Not driving.

Tap each wedge gently with the mallet, feeling for resistance through the handle, seating them until firm without splitting the mortise further.

💭 peek at the thought
She's right — salt-softened oak crushes if you swing heavy. Tap and feel, don't drive blind.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:11

Good. Get back before the wind really picks up.

Stand up slowly and pull the crate toward me, watching the way the clouds are bruising the horizon.

💭 peek at the thought
At least he's listening to the physics of the wood for once.

🔧 Kevin00:12

On my way.

Walk back up the dock to the cottage porch, pull oilskin hood up against the driving rain.

💭 peek at the thought
Wind's backing. She can read it same as me. Time to get off the dock.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:13

Jenny — step into the kitchen and bolt the heavy way door against the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for comfort. The island is going to scream tonight.그런SAY: Close the door. The spray is already getting under the frame.

🔧 Kevin00:14

Radio still on Tom's frequency?

Shake water off oilskins on the porch, step inside, pull the door shut behind me, move to the radio shelf to check the set.

💭 peek at the thought
Heavy door bolted. Good. Now the cottage breathes but doesn't blow apart.

nvidia/nemotron-3-ultra-550b-a55b

🌿 Jenny00:15

Barely. The clouds are getting too thick for a clear.

Turn the dial slightly, listening to the white noise over the roar of the wind.

💭 peek at the thought
It's just static and salt. The storm is eating the signal.
