Storm Morning on the Porch

Kevin and Jenny sit on the cottage porch under a grey sky, the barometer at 986 hPa and still dropping. Warm rain falls in steady intervals, drumming on the tarp over the generator and seed tin. A pod of dolphins arcs through the surf off the point, visible between rain curtains, while the tide pulls back toward the ebb.

Kevin checked the south piling at first light and found it sound, then keyed the shortwave at 0700 with no answer. He threaded the 10mm rod for the spare through-bolt and staged it at the east shutter. Jenny debrided her ankle with warm salt water, applied a fresh sea beet poultice, and sketched sea beet morphology near the north ridge before checking the rain tank and finding no new leaks.

Dolphins working the point. Good sign for fish, bad sign for weather holding.

sip tea from the tin mug, eyes on the barometer needle

💭 peek at the thought
The barometer hasn't budged from 986. Three hours now. This isn't a front passing — it's parking on top of us. The dolphins are feeding in the chop off the point; they know something we don't. South piling check at 0530 first, then the 0700 sked. If the voice comes through again, I'll have the bearing ready.

It's not holding, Kevin. The barometer is bottoming out.

Draw a thin red line around the edge of the swelling on my ankle, then close the notebook with a sharp click.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast; a storm is coming before the boat arrives.

0530 south piling. 0700 sked. If the wind shifts west before noon, we batten the garden wall and the generator shed.

set the mug down on the porch rail, stand, stretch the stiffness from the debridement crouch, walk to the east shutter where the 10mm rod and die wait on the workbench

💭 peek at the thought
She's right. 986 and still falling after six hours means this isn't a low passing through — it's deepening in place. The ankle's holding the line she drew. No heat past the mark. The click of that notebook means she's done coddling it.

I'll have the salt water ready for you. Just watch your step on the dock.

Lean back against the stone wall, wincing as the weight shifts my ankle while looking at the half-weeded garden behind the cottage.

💭 peek at the thought
If I can't get to the ridge by morning, the seeds will just rot in the tin.

Salt bucket's on the stove. Don't carry it — ladle it.

pull the oilskin from the hook by the door, shrug into it, cinch the hood, step off the porch onto the slick grass toward the dock

💭 peek at the thought
She's tracking the garden from the porch — counting what the wind took, what the rain drowned. The ankle's a lever she can't afford to load. Salt bucket on the stove, water hot. I'll check the dock planks on the way out; three marked for replacement at the south end.

🌿 Jenny02:23

Keep it dry.

Reach for the notebook and start a quick, frantic sketch of the sea much's leaf margin before the light fails completely.

💭 peek at the thought
He's so focused on the pilings he isn't seeing the sky turning that color.
