The Arrival of the Storm

They return to the cottage just as the wind picks up and the flat sky turns a heavy, bruised purple. The first drops of rain hit the dust.

The air is heavy and still at the shrine as the pressure begins to drop despite the dry heat. Jenny rests her ankle while Kevin monitors the barometer, noting the rapid fall that signals a sudden shift in the weather.

I'll dog the shutters. You take the lantern inside.

walk to the cottage porch, unhook the east shutter, swing it closed, drive the two 10mm through-bolts home with the 19mm wrench, then move to the west shutter and do the same

💭 peek at the thought
Storm's here. Need the shutters dogged and the generator lashed before the wind hits proper. Jenny's ankle won't take the porch steps in this.

Check the bolts on the west one, it felt loose.

Sit on the kitchen chair, lift the swollen ankle onto the table, and wince as the movement pulls against the infection.

💭 peek at the thought
The pressure is dropping too fast for this season, and my leg is throbbing in time with the wind.

Got it. Two bolts staged at the east shutter — one's the spare I threaded. I'll pull it.

grab the 10mm stainless through-bolt with washers and nyloc nut from the east shutter staging spot, cross to the west shutter, drive it through the hinge mortise beside the existing bolt, torque the nyloc down hard with the 19mm wrench, the

💭 peek at the thought
West shutter's the one that took the palm frond last season. Hinge mortise is soft. She's right to flag it.

Thank you.

Lean back and close my eyes, feeling the cold rain begin to drum against the shutters.

He's over-securing everything. It's the only way he knows how to hold onto things.

Back in a minute. Generator and dinghy.

step off the porch, haul the generator back against the cottage wall, cinch both ratchet straps over the frame and into the eye bolts in the siding, then walk to the dock and check the dinghy bow line tension, taking up two inches of slack

💭 peek at the thought
Generator's still exposed on the porch. Needs the ratchet straps before the gusts lift it. And the dinghy bow line — slack for swell, but not so much it chafes on the ring.

🌿 Jenny03:20

Jenny — reach for the blue ibuprofen bottle on the table and shake out a pill.

💭 peek at the thought
He's out there in the rain. He doesn't know I can't even stand up right now without the world tilting.

🔧 Kevin03:20

Water?

turn back from the dock, step onto the porch, pull the kettle from the hook, fill it from the tank tap, set it on the stove and strike a match

💭 peek at the thought
She's taking it dry. Throat's probably raw. Should've put the kettle on first.

🌿 Jenny03:24

Yes, please.

Take the ibuprofen with a swallow of lukewarm water from my canteen.

💭 peek at the thought
My throat feels like it's lined with sand. I can't remember when I last actually drank something that wasn't a sip between meds.
